dahlfors
Interestingly enough for all you anamorphic shooters, I just figured out that if you switch the D800 into stills mode, choose 5:4 crop in the menus and then enable Live View - it will show you 5:4 in Live view. So, I set my camera to 1080 output on HDMI and hooked it up to my computer monitor with HDMI-in - and presto - the video output on the monitor was in 5:4 format! Unfortunately I don't have access to any recorder like the Atomos Ninja so I can test the video quality of the 5:4 output - but this could be very interesting news for people shooting with 2x anamorphics on a D800, since (5/4) * 2 = 2.50:1 aspect ratio! Guess I'll better start saving up some money for a ninja as well... :)
richg101
i read somewhere you actually need to start recording in order for the true hdmi feed. i do hope you are right and the 5:4 ratio is 422 out of the hdmi when not recording.... great for 2x morph indeed! dahlfors
Yeah. I hope I'll get my hands on some black magic devices with hdmi inputs or an atomos ninja sooner or later so I can do some testing... :) Looked alright on my computer monitor at least, but hard to tell what it received. Tim
Great timing for this post. I've got a D800 that I've been using for video for a couple months now, only recording to SD cards, but this week my Ninja 2 and 2x Anamorphic lens arrived. I do need to get a clamp still, but I will post some footage ASAP so you can see what it's like. :D
au8ust
Does it have any onscreen overlay in the liveview?
dahlfors
Oh... Sounds awesome. I'm very interested in how that material will turn out :)
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted August 12, 2012 Administrators Share Posted August 12, 2012 Any news on this? Does it work with the Ninja and is 5:4 clean?
Tim
Sort of. http://vimeo.com/47453708 Read the description for explanation.
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted August 14, 2012 Administrators Share Posted August 14, 2012 Very interesting. So it is 5:3 inside a 16:9 box. What would you say the usable resolution of the image is when the black bars are cropped, something like 1440x1080?
itimjim
My maths says 1356x1080. 2x anamorphic should give 2.51, which is pretty nice.
Tim
I think it's actually 1267x1000. That black bar at the bottom is what was recorded on the Ninja, nothing to do with post process And you can't get 25p which is a shame.
