KarimNassar
Hello everyone, I first heard of the gh2 and anamorphic lenses on this blog and I got curious. After reading and reading I finally decided to take the leap and ordered one. Although I'm not new to images from my post-production trade I am new to film making and it's fascinating. I'll share the videos of my journey in this thread, there is a complete rundown of each vid on vimeo if you are interested. I should get my anamorphic clamps and diopter next week, can't wait to get them and finally try my anamorphic lens! :) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts thanks http://vimeo.com/46627432 http://vimeo.com/46683852 nahua and Axel

KarimNassar
thanks to both of you! I just started testing my anamorphic lens so I should have a new video up soon :)
KarimNassar
So I went out with a friend who has a steady cam to try some shots with the anamorphic and it was a disaster  . Because of the horizontal squeeze tiny inclinations of the camera made the vertical perspectives shift a lot. Could be useful for some shots where the protagonist is drunk or drugged haha but otherwise the footage gives you a headache. But we both suck at operating the steady cam anyways so maybe it's doable when operated by someone with decent skills Anybody on here already successfully recorded anamorphic steady cam shots? KarimNassar
Okay so here is a first test with anamorphic <3 complete description on vimeo, feel free to follow me there and I will follow back. Would be nice to network. looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Axel
Okay so here is a first test with anamorphic <3
The actual AR seems to be not 1:2,6, but 1:3, should look like this: Needs to be squeezed more. Your two clips above are fantastic. KarimNassar
KarimNassar
You are right about the aspect ratio, couple people commented on vimeo as well. I tried an in between aspect in my latest vid because I don't like the correct 2x squeeze: I think it works well but let me know what you think! http://vimeo.com/48706272
Axel
This is really beautiful. I think most viewers won't realize the slight distortion. If you find the squeeze factor too extreme, you should perhaps get yourself another anamorphot. As a cinema goer, I love scope (f.k.a. cinemascope), because it is the ultimate AR for dramatic storytelling. What Andrew and his followers do with more extreme ARs ... • makes cuts too crazy to follow any logically built plotline. You end up assembling very similarly framed shots, and instead of increasing the power of a cut, you reduce it. Suitable only for more lyric subjects (which is of course typical for most of Andrews films). You avoid the problem by framing extreme close-ups and long shots alike, and you blur the corners with a vignette, making the AR narrower effectively. • screams for a giant screen, but the clips are watched in postcard-size by most vimeo-viewers. Though imho wider ARs also work on vimeo, the point is lost. As a classic example of how powerful a scope montage can be, watch this: The motto reads 'bigger than life', and this not only means more square meters of the screen, but details too goddam big to fit into the frame. If you expand the scope, be consequent, change extreme long shots abruptly with cropped faces and details. BTW: This film is cinemascope/anamorphotic only in the projector. It was filmed with cropped 35mm, called 'two-perf' (see here), which meant half the resolution of standard 35mm. This one is for the pixel peepers.
KarimNassar
very interesting read! I agree about what you said about the more extreme aspect ratios. I think they can be very beautiful and work quite well, you can have beautiful shots of scenery etc. But the two mains problems are you end up looking at a screen that is mostly black, and more importantly it hurts storytelling which is the most important part. Now one solution would be for me to squeeze the footage correctly 2x and cut the borders of the frame on the sides. This does not work for me simply because I spend time composing the shot on the set with the full frame visible, and the cut ruins the composition. I found a rental company that rents the la 7200 for cheap so I will be experimenting with that soon :)

KarimNassar
thanks! I wish I did not mess up the exposure on the last one, but those vids are exercises so it filled it's purpose and taught me a lesson. I did re up the vid though,I crushed the blacks too much on my first edit. You know you messed up your exposure when you have to darken the shadows in post and not bring them up... KarimNassar
Too short ;)
haha absolutely true! There is a reason though, I am in pre production for the entire clip so pointless to make anything longer than that. All my vids so far are exercises and not final products meant to entertain. Although I do hope they are entertaining and interesting for other beginners like myself. This clip is nothing like what I want to do for the real thing though, I'm looking into elaborate light setups at the moment. And I am looking into other cameras as well, I will only use the gh2 if the limited budget forces me to. the problem is budget of course, rental, both lighting and camera, is expensive... thanks for watching always nice to get feedback! :)
