Like FCPX Apple shipped their 2011 MacBook Pro models somewhat under-specced for video editing. Despite having a quad core model I was still getting pretty shoddy performance in Premiere Pro CS5.5 with Apple’s default configuration of 4GB of RAM and a 750GB 5400RPM hard drive on occasions.

Although the processor is an absolute beast, it isn’t coupled to the RAM and disk it really deserves. Apple did this for supply reasons as well as cost so they have a good excuse, but it still sucks.

Here’s the solution.

You'll also want to look at this tool, to enable TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs, otherwise performance will degrade over time

or install SoftRAID which should enable TRIM support if you use their driver (you'd have to verify that with them)

Or tentatively as I have on soak at the mo for Pro Tools - build a Hackintosh - 5GHz 32 GB 32GB 1600 MHz RAM 120 GB SSD trimmed work drive for video and lots of 6GB/s storage - half the price of a Mac Pro - of which I have 8 - and getting poorer every purchase lol - also CUDA support with the 1.5 gig 5900 NVID Will report back, but Logic working a treat so far with no Kext panics.
