With my half knowledge I understand the term macro blocking as the 'big square pixel clouds' I see in big, darker areas. Correct me. It is probably not noise, but simplifying gradients, and therefore has the same origins as banding. Does it disappear at higher bitrates?

My bad I most likely made an English mistake and it might be called an artifact?
I don't know if it disappears at higher bitrates, but I can tell you that with the flow motion 2.02 hack which is hbr it is very much present.

Those who give inspire, those who take retire,
small minds discuss people,
average minds events,
but great minds discuss ideas.

Phil's a dude, Andrew's a dude and we are more the better because of them.

Thank you to both of you, and keep marching,
because the more knowledge we have,
the better we can all get at being better, that's an achievement right?

And that for me is only one thing,
lifes great idea :)

I think its plain Disgusting, that people make "personal attacks", here, or on any other forum.

Maybe we should have a thread for the choicest of "personal attacks", and saying the nastiest shit about people. And, give the winner some cheap chinese-made camera, which has batteries, which explode, on over-charging.

Right now, we are discussing technology, film-making, electronic and other things, and lets stick to that, whether in this thread, or otherwise.

C'mon guys, lets Grow Up. We aren't adolescents in a ghetto or bronx, showing off our tongues, because we didn't get better opportunities to develop our intellectual or professional skills. Anyone, who doesn't think he(/she) has something to contribute, regarding this, can create their own site/ forum, and discuss whatever seems more interesting. There. Not here.

Why can't we all just have a big hug and get along? :)

Anyway here we go: http://philipbloom.n.../09/15/genesis/

Enjoy. Sweet camera!

Very nicely done, Philip. Some of your most cinematic work to date! Any chance that you could make the uncompressed file available for download? We are all dying to get a read on the banding/artifacting/macro-blocking situation.

I am thrilled how the GH3 is shaping up. I don't feel like I would have been confident bringing the GH2 into several of the shooting situations in this film, but it looks like the GH3 was able to pull it off. It's going to be a tough decision between this and the BlackMagic.

I only have a very compressed version. It was converted to ProRes HQ I believe for the editing and that is what the master is on...

It seems they solved all main issues (except rolling shutter).
Clean, detailed, with good range and no banding images.
72 all-i is really good, beyond competition's more expensive products.

What really I don't understand is why half of the short movies with a minimum of storyline end up in a guy running for a girl.
It's hard to belive that Bruce Logan didn't realize he was doing something seen so many times in the DSLR world since Reverie.
It seems technology is filling the gap but plot... so many times is poor.
Short movies could be excellent for puzzling stories well told in a handful of minutes, and a good one can really help the promotion message behind it.

For the history buffs, the movie "Rubber" had the same motel in it. The movie was shot using the Canon 5D2.

Trailer: around 1:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G5pyFhmAqE

GH3 video: check the motel out....at 4 seconds....at 34 seconds...

I think that the story is just a story, it's hard to come up with a different and mind blowing thing when you probably have little time and the main thing is to show the camera capabilities. So the story isn't something to pay attention, this short movie was made exclusively to show different situations and how the camera handles it, that's the main part. The story doesn't matter at all.

If you go there you would start asking, why all the suspense, why the desperation, how can't he reach her, etc. See? It's pointless...

Good catch. That movie was bizarre-o. But the nihilist in me enjoyed it.

@Andrew and QuickHitRecord,

I liked Rubber too. I don't want to take away from the GH3 discussion, but the next movie created after Rubber was "Wrong." I still have to watch Wrong, however it should rank with Rubber.

By the way, I like there are alot of camera choices coming on the scene. Gotta luv the competitive spirit!
