Don Kotlos
Hey guys, they fucked up, 4K is totally cropped, like m43 or something like that.I am telling you they must feel some strange pride when they mess video up. Just like with the Df.
Cinegain
Maybe they do take after Samsung after all... D500... NX500... teddoman
tugela
More info is available in this PDF on Nikon's website: http://chsvimg.nikon.com/lineup/microsite/d500/common/pdf/technology-digest.pdfStrangely enough, the D500 can record up to the full 29:29 in 4K mode, but on the D5 it's limited to just three minutes!EDIT: On further inspection, it seems that the D500 does full-pixel readout from a 4K area in order to get the video. Definitely better than line-skipping, though it's going to leave the effective crop quite near the m4/3rds level. The D5 thing must be a typo. The crop appears to be for HD only. At least that seems to be what the pdf is saying, but perhaps it is just poorly presented.

At least that seems to be what the pdf is saying, but perhaps it is just poorly presented. The d5 probably does a full sensor readout and gets hot after 3minutes. The d500 is cropped, it's even less then m43, more like black magic crop.
tugela
Finally! Now Canon will make a move.Canon will have 4K in their upcoming cameras IMO.
Cinegain
... and still manage to cripple it enough not to make it worth while. Unless some certain people to do with Magic Lantern manage to bypass it. Anyways. Is the D5 even more cropped in, in FHD, than the D500??? The d500 is cropped, it's even less then m43, more like black magic crop.Cropped for HD only (in one mode, the other has an oversampled area). 4K is full sensor. The image in the pdf doesn't really make sense. I'm guessing it is actually the sensor image figure for the D5 and they have just recycled it for the D500 document.
Nikkor
Cropped for HD only (in one mode, the other has an oversampled area). 4K is full sensor.Look at the red cropped area maaaan its super cropped, look at the image not the table.I don't think the D5 is cropped, but I don't have the pdf for that. Andrew Rieger
And just like that, the Nikon D500 is dead for video. Thanks for nothing Nikon.
David Bowgett
The d500 is cropped, it's even less then m43, more like black magic crop.At a rough guess, it looks like it's somewhere in-between the G7 (no crop in 4K) and GH4 (~1.3x crop). Might not be the crazy-huge crop we got from the NX500, but still...Probably the best we can hope for is that by the time 4K filters through to the rest of Nikon's line-up, there's an option to switch between full sensor line-skip/pixel bin and 1:1 crop modes. YepThey are such bozos!!How come the Samsung NX1 can do a perfect 4K image from a 28MP Super 35mm sensor with no crop but Nikon... NIKON for heavens sake!! Administrators Andrew Reid Posted January 5, 2016 Administrators Share Posted January 5, 2016 ... and still manage to cripple it enough not to make it worth while. Unless some certain people to do with Magic Lantern manage to bypass it.Unfortunately it looks like a hardware limitation not a firmware thing... the sensor clearly has a 1:1 readout only for 4K and no binning like on the A7R II in full frame for instance. They clearly couldn't do a fast enough full sensor readout at 20MP and downsample it on the image processor to 4K, like most other cameras have been able to do for at least a year now!Probably a cost saving measure, but idiotic for Nikon's bottom line in terms of sales to videographers. Andrew Rieger
Does Nikon even bother talking to users before they release these things? Its crazy how much more advanced Samsung and its even more tragic that they are basically abandoning the video market. They never stood a chance breaking into the photography market but if they made a dedicated video camera that was designed to compete with the FS5 it would probably be a major hit. Danyyyel
I guess it is there Nikon designed sensors and will have to wait for the Sony based ones to get full frame 4k or full Dx. The D810/D750 sensor are alredy doing a lot of pixel binding from its 36/24 mp sensor to get clean no moire full frame coverage.
Cinegain
That's also a thing that always baffles me...... either these users value their relationship too much to be critical or something... or these brands just don't want to give people an amazing camera that does everything right, because they then wouldn't be able to sell cameras to those people in the years to come.
