mercer
So, it's been out for a few weeks now, what is the verdict? Does the 60p and longer battery life justify the upgrade from the Pocket?
Zak Forsman
I have both and I've only grabbed the Pocket to do side by side comparisons since the Micro arrived. Battery life is the main reason. Even with a Canon LP-E6 battery plate attached to it, that LCD screen (I assume) limits battery life to about an hour. On the Micro I get twice that with the same battery. Headed out this morning to the Santa Monica Airport for another gig that I'm shooting with it. mercer
mercer
Good to hear. Do you have a pic of your rig? I have seen a few best offer deals on eBay and I must admit I am tempted. And since there are few small screen options becoming available, I may take the plunge... As long as I can get a small footprint. Is the internal audio any better than the Pocket? 12 minutes ago, Zak Forsman said: I have both and I've only grabbed the Pocket to do side by side comparisons since the Micro arrived. Zak Forsman
Yes, internal audio is better. I still like to use a rode videomicro with it if I want something I can use, if I have to. sounds a touch better but is also more directional than the built-in mic. I'll try to take a picture of my rig today.
mercer
Sorry, I meant external audio. Do you find that there is any usability, other than a scratch track, with the VideoMicro?
Zak Forsman
the preamps are better. not great. using the external mic I'd say the audio is useable for documentary or behind the scenes. but I wouldn't rely on it for narrative.
raf702
What are you using for monitoring by the way, Smallhd or BMD VA ?
Zak Forsman
smallhd 502. when weight isn't a factor, sometimes i'll hook up my odyssey 7Q+ and just use it to monitor.
mercer
Yeah, I would do double sound, and use an external mic for a scratch track, but it's nice to know it is okay in case I pick up something golden. Is the FPN only an issue with Raw or is it also a problem with prores? Thanks for the answers btw.
Zak Forsman
The FPN is hard to see. You have to try very hard to make it an issue. But the potential for it is there regardless if you are capturing RAW or ProRes.
Zak Forsman
From today's shoot with the Micro in bright california sun. Still amazes me how much detail is retained, especially with all that white in the frame. This is for a client so I can't leave them up indefinitely, but for now... raf702, Chrisis, Liam and 5 others
mercer
I can't believe how amazing that looks... Mind blowing. Does it say in the manual that the micro will make people look like Greg Kinear? Kurtisso
Zak Forsman
haha. no. you'll have to get that actual greg kinnear. nice guy by the way. he saw the micro and asked about it.
mercer
That's cool man. You're living the dream. A couple more questions, if you don't mind... Was that RAW or ProRes? Does the micro suffer from IR pollution like the pocket did? And is ASA 800 still the native ISO... Or ASA?
Zak Forsman
This was RAW 3:1. Yes, IR can be an issue, just like the Pocket. 800 is the native ISO.
mercer
I had another look at those grabs and the details really are amazing. The light fall off on his leather jacket is stunning. Hmm. I can't believe there aren't more discussions about this camera! Damnit... Now I have to sell more stuff... Good thing I have enough lenses to film 30 features... So it shouldn't be too hard to raise the capital. Btw, was that with your DSO?
Zak Forsman
Lens setup was my Sigma 18-35mm, Metabones BMPCC/EF Speed Booster, Hoya IR Cut, Hoya ProND 200. mercer, MattH, IronFilm and 1 other
Cinegain
But basically, you might as well shoot with the BMPCC... given you have your own workarounds for the battery life and don't need the 60p per se? -- or not --
Zak Forsman
noise is slightly improved, rolling shutter is improved. I personally prefer the micro brain form factor to the pocket's point and shoot design. adding up all the improvements, there was enough for me to make the upgrade. but that's a call each person needs to make on their own -- if the slight improvements and differences justify the expense. Cinegain
Yeah, I have 3 BMPCCs lying around, I find 'em manageable to work with. I would've trade-in two of them for one of those BMMCCs if global shutter was part of the package, but alas. But yeah, it does make for a mean actual micro cinema camera. I think the Craft Camera might be the next best thing... if it actually ever gets done.
