zerocool22
Hello, I am looking for taking lenses for my kowa bell and howell for my 5d iii. I have a canon 100mm 2.0. But I see that a lot of users are using FD, M42 lenses. Any really sharp lenses out there that you can recommend? Thanks!
tweak
The slower lenses with smaller front elements often pair better. I quite like nFDs but there's many other options out there.
zerocool22
Well I would still like it to be sharp at least 2.0. Sharper at faster aputures like 1.4 or 1.8 is even better offcourse.
ken
Ef 100 f2 is a very good lens, metal thread, better then 85 1.8, if don't mind not so wide. 85L is the king in 85s, but not sure which Ana lens fits it. 16h is too small for it. Other big lens might not wide enough with it. BrorSvensson
raf702
Most vintage lenses are pretty sharp. Just depends really how fast your shooting at. My vintage Nikon primes, I shoot at f2, and it's still somewhat sharp paired with my Kowa 16D 2x.
Brian Caldwell
Just something to keep in mind: aberrations in the cylindrical optics and/or front focusing group will almost certainly dominate the overall lens performance, not the rear spherical group. zerocool22
Yeah I have a kowa bell and howell, that should be the sharpest cheap anamorphic out there. but if I start with a unsharp lens, it will not improve the sharpness overall. So I just want to make sure I got the sharpest lenses out there.

bzpop
my copy of Canon FD 55mm f1.2 is very sharp even wide open, and the bokeh @ 1.2 is just sick! but for 5Dmkiii i am afraid 55mm is not wide enough, 85mm f1.4 rokinon is dirt cheap and has very good picture, Nikon AI is a bit more expensive but it's an excellent piece of glass. bzpop
here is kowa 16H on Canon FD 55MM f1.2, wide open, frame from 4K @ 500 Mbps BrorSvensson
ken
I think OM 55 1.2 is also very good, and mine is non radioactive one. If you don't mine radioactive, lots of choice in 55 1.2's.
eris
Of course it all depends on a thousand different factors including the specific sample of the lens you get, but I've found that my Russian Helios 44M, Zeiss Jena 35mm f2.4 Flektogon and Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.2 are all tack sharp at "reasonable" settings. Maybe you could explain your shooting requirements and environment a little more.
zerocool22
Well I shoot a lot at open apurtures at F1.4 at night , So I would need something that is sharp at 1.4 (or 1.8, max fstop 2.0)
Rudolf
Honestly I will never understand the rat-race for sharpness. I don't need that for video. furthermore I often tend to blur that clinical sharp digital image... Iam more interested in Resolution, color rendition, practicality. Just think about all the modern glass, most of them are super sharp I think.

It is always sharp. I have OM 55 1.2 and 50 1.2. Both are sharper than Nikon Ais 50 1.2 at 1.2.
