I've found Robert Mckee's Story a great resource, somehow irritating, but useful.

To not understand, or study, these basic principles equates to one of two things... The writer is too lazy to learn them, or they are too stubborn due to some preconception that they are creating art and they don't need rules or craft. It's like that old cliche... Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. 

You are right, of course. It's just that an original, organic story needs to be structured. It needs to be edited, rewritten, polished, trimmed. But the wild and uncensored idea must be first. The content. Even meaning and message come later. Or everything becomes a boring mess.
