Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 19, 2016 Administrators Share Posted September 19, 2016 A bit of a bombshell this. Sony have just this second revealed a pro-level stills camera which maxes out the 42MP sensor last seen in the A7R II. The Chris
Damn! Count me as someone that never thought a A99II would ever become a reality. FF4k, 12fps, and Sony's best sensor. 1dxII - who? The SAR guy - as usual - had no clue this was coming. $3199 makes me want to dump all my E-mount stuff, the A99 had the best egos of any camera I've ever used. Damn! Geoff CB
If I could mount my Nikon lenses on this, I would dump my A7r2. Worth it for the bigger battery alone.
The Chris
Just read the press release on DPreview, this is essentially a A-mount A7rII with a better buffer. Full pixel readout is only in s35 mode. Hmmm...
neosushi
And now 3,100$ turns into 3,600€. Crazy.
JurijTurnsek
Remains to be seem if the FF 4K mode has been improved from. a7RII. Unfortunately, Sony missed the chance for releasing an "a9" model which would be the a99II with E-mount and no mirror (give a complimentary adapter for A-mount users). Jimmy
Interested to hear more.... If it is 8bit 4:2:0 though, i'll be waiting for the GH5 (or hacked 5DIV)
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 19, 2016 Author Administrators Share Posted September 19, 2016 First camera with revamped Sony menus. Looks more like a Canon menu system. Better grouping as well. Geoff CB, AaronChicago and Marco Tecno
Mark Nakib
Hi guys, just wanted to chime in here. According to Wikipedia the A-mount flange distance is very close to the EF-mount. Nikon's is longer. This means that, although there are no adapters currently on the market, there definitely could be, at the very least passive ones. There are F-mount to EF-mount adapters available and people do successfully use them so I see no reason why 0.5mm would make a difference in the feasibility of an F-mount to A-mount adapter. theSUBVERSIVE
New menus, 4K without overheating, Dual SD Card slots, articulated screen and some more dope Sony tech! Everything E-mount users have been waiting in an A9 camera, but in an A-mount camera! hahahahaha... Sony has sense of humor, I give them that! BasiliskFilm
Bigger body gives them scope to do a bit more stuff than A7rII, but probably only of interest to A mount lens owners. Does it have a translucent mirror? Possibility of faster AF for sports photographers, and a bit more robustness etc.
toxotis70
does it have the same restrictions as other SLT's ? I had some of them and for example you cant have CAF in video mode with f stop bigger than f/3.5 !!! teddoman
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 19, 2016 Author Administrators Share Posted September 19, 2016 It's a terrible mistake to have A-mount on there, the could easily keep the same A77 / NX1 style form factor with a mirrorless E-mount. Mirrorless does not have to mean small! Also can't see what it offers over an A7R II for video? SR and Dean
Kino
https://***URL removed***/news/5855300360/sony-announces-alpha-99-mark-ii "The a99 II can capture 4K at 100Mbps (using XAVC S) with full sensor read-out and no pixel binning. A Super 35 option is also available, with 1.8x oversampling. A 'Slow and Quick' mode lets users jump between 1 and 120 fps at the push of a button. All of the capture tools you'd expect are available, including zebra patterns, time code, S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles and 4:2:2 output over HDMI." The XAVCS internal is a shame, but necessary because Intraframe would probably be impossible in a body that is much smaller than a Canon 1D series. At least there is HDMI clean out. The 4K downres from 8K makes it sound like a Sony F65 for your pocket! Geoff CB
ricardo_sousa11
Is it 120fps @ 4k ? Is it 422 external @ 30fps or 120fps? Still need to know a lot before jumping to this instead of the GH5, which seems like a winner at this point.

mike_tee_vee
As puzzling as it is to release a top spec'd A-mount camera, I commend Sony for STILL supporting a legacy mount, and rewarding long-term users with a current body. Samsung could learn a thing or two from this practice! Kisaha, Mattias Burling, Ed_David and 2 others
