Katrikura
Hello: Again the boys lantern MGIC surprise us. A1ex, just determined as record the raw video in 12 bit or 10 bit, although it is a finding emerging, it is only a matter of time to debug the application and develop a specific module raw 10 or 12 bit. As you know, the problem of actaul RAW 14 bit, is what is fantastic, but you need very fast and stable cards (1066x) to record on average 4gb x minute and sometimes, depending on the quality of the card becomes unstable recording . With the current discovery means we can record RAW, but with greater stability and less space or at a higher frame rate. Today is a great day for the Magic Lantern filmakers community. regards Katrikura Sorry for the bad English http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5601.300 sudopera, iamoui, IronFilm and 4 others

Jimmy
Has anyone crunched the numbers on what this could mean for recording 4K raw?
Viet Bach Bui
At 10 bit that's 40% smaller size compared to 16 bit so you're looking at like 2.5K continuous max.
hyalinejim
Yes, but any gains in resolution are only offered by the crop mode with the stuttery greyscale preview - it's off center and quite difficult to follow live action. The normal mode and 3x crop fast preview mode are limited to 1920x1080 AFAIK. Justin Bacle and kidzrevil
Jimmy
i'm thinking more about if they hack the 5D IV
hyalinejim
It would help a lot with bitrates for sure.

I imagine it will be the same deal with the MKIV.
Nikkor
Oh god, I hope they unlock the 1080p mode on the eosm too. samuel.cabral

Sure, but hey, you can't get everything right ? :D I would be insanely happy with 2000x1080 12bit Raw continuous recording on the mighty 250€ Canon 50D ! TrueIndigo
For folks who just can't bring themselves to delete the RAW files, this will save some storage space. And if it also helps the actual recording datarate, the older DIGIC 4 cameras will get a performance boost: keeps the 50D and 5DII relevant for people who already own those cameras. ThomHaig
That's great news that the Magic Lantern guys have figured out 8 or 10 bit recording. It would be great to see if this has the potential for the 5d III to shoot higher frame rates at 1080p raw! Is it possible to calculate possible frame rates? Horisontal x vertical x fps x bit depth / 8 (=1 byte) = Bps == 1920x1080 x 24 x 14 / 8 = 8709120 = 83 MB/s. The limit for the 5D3 card interface is around 95MB / s, which means backwards, the highest possibile framerate is 38 fps at 10 bit, 1920x1080, but we are far from that right now.
