I've looked at the ME64 and it looks like good value, I had to record some more interviews yesterday in a hotel, which also was nosiy and had air conditioning too :-( Will the ME64 help in these situations or should I just save for one of the mics like the Audix SCX1-HC mentioned earlier in this thread? ME64 is more a videographer's microphone, while an Audix / AT / Oktova (which are all popular options) are entry level indie ones. Kisaha Posted January 30, 2017 Share Posted January 30, 2017 @IronFilm For the price (Audio Technica is 10-20% more expensive than the Audix in Europe, depending where you shop) the Audix is a much better microphone (in my opinion of course), if it was 20% less than the Audix then it would be tempting, but if it was 10% cheaper, then Audix would be my choice againl! Anyway, I haven't done any scientific tests, and in this category (around 500) and from these 2 brands, I expect very good quality Oktava is 1/3 the price of Audio Technica, now, owing the Oktava for 3 years, I would have saved for the Audix, but I bought without testing it first, big mistake, on the other hand, the 3 capsules have give me a slight versatility for different sound jobs. I really appreciate Curtis and watch his videos, but Youtube personas aren't Gods, and in the beginning of his youtube carrer I considered him to be not very experienced (same as Yuri when he was started), but they have involved rather well though their work, still I believe there are hundreds of professionals with better knowledge, and no youtube channels. IronFilm Posted January 30, 2017 Share Posted January 30, 2017 Kisaha, audio preferences can be very subjective. And circumstances vary from shoot to shoot also which one is "better". So I don't say it is so clear cut which of the Audio Technica or Audix is "better". I agree Curtis Judd is not an expert specialist soundie (but there are very few of those on YouTube! Matt Price is the only independent one on YT who regularly updates), he is just a videographer generalist, but he is the best regular one of those on YouTube for audio info. jcs Posted January 30, 2017 Share Posted January 30, 2017 Audio Technica makes good stuff. The AT 4029 is an excellent mic. Mid-side stereo is very cool and highly useful, allowing for everything between mono to very wide stereo in post (lots of free plugins, I use MSED. During playback on good speakers, it can sound very present/3D). I started looking for hypercardioid mics after learning first-hand why shotguns can be problematic indoors when there are reverberations or reflections. The AT 4029 had been perfect in carpeted/highly damped locations. For monitoring, the Audio Technica ATH-M50x is quite remarkable for the price (see the reviews). The Sony 7506 is the 'standard' and is lighter and more comfortable, so I use them for on location monitoring (had them first). I use the ATH-M50 (older model with straight cable) for critical sound mixing in post, noticeably more detailed sound vs. the Sony. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
