hidalgoserra
Hey, trying to get familiar with the lenses, i just finished buying stuff that now ive understood that i need absolutelly a rig or a steadycam rig, by the way what you think would be better? ive done a quick test that i want to show you guys. https://vimeo.com/60781305 jgharding
JohnBarlow
I like it. 'you got some moves on ya' man' :)

jgharding
That looks lovely. What was your kit combo here? Very good grade too... I love the flickering lights in the tunnel. I've always been a fan of desync strobing!!!
hidalgoserra
Thank you Jg to be honest here i just went with the "more then cheap lets say zero kit" :D with the exception of course of the hypergonar with a 7d, no rig or anything particular, just a bit of grading in nuke. soupkitchen
You don't need a steadicam, just a decent shoulder rig with some weight on it. That will steady you up enough.
soupkitchen
Forgot to add, love the grade.
hidalgoserra
thanks for the tip suopkitchen and for the compliments of course..
jgharding
Would you mind showing an image of or writing a bit about your grade process? I've never used nuke and the look of this piece is quite intriguing! Is it a modular environment?
hidalgoserra
Hi Jg, well the print of the screen will be really a mess as, most of the node ive used are gizmo i made myself as combination of different nodes, in reality nuke is not meant for colour grading, usually i would go with after aftter or scratch (even better) but i was on nuke for another project already :D but i will try to post a sort of basic tut as soon as i can if anybody its really interested in that. the process in nuke its basically a typical one. 1) degrain the footage 2) selective sharpening 3) exposure and gamma 4) re grain 5) color correction/matte mask/various colour overlay etc. that should be all more or less. hope it helps
jgharding
Interesting, so it's lower level (in programming terms, not complexity!) than DaVinci? You built modules from modules as it were? It sounds like Synthmaker modular development for audio in a way...
jgharding
Ah I've never thought of Scratch, but I've had a look around and it reminds me of DaVinci... also resembles the kind of price DaVinci used to command!
hidalgoserra
well nuke its fully modular ( all node base like shake) and the phyton language give you the chance to write what ever you want to fit your needs, scratch its rock solid and as you said similar to davinci or quantel that are the non plus ultra for colour grading, but im far from those :)
jgharding
Hmm I think I'll stick with DaVinci for the moment, I'm not much of a coder! I'm interested as to how you went about making this look, it doesn't look just like simple colour shifts, if you wouldn't mind sharing I'd be interested to know how you made the colour styles at 19 seconds and 1:44 for example, if you have a moment. Do you have specific colours saturated? I'm intrigued...
Julian
I like the look as well. I'm going to try to do something similar with my n00b DaVinci skills. I think it should be possible with color/contrast corrections.
hidalgoserra
Guys with davinci you will most probably do 10 times better in 5 minutes then what i need half a day :D About the colour style i like to keep consistency between shoots so i usually go with less different styles as possible trying to just vary till a get a colour pattern i like, of course only pushing colours isnth enough, in this example ive blown up lights, but on a real project i would have being much more carefull on keeping details without destroying the image, lets consider this is a 7d mov file too, with raw material i would have made a much better job in the same time. Julian
My quick try here, grading some night footage I had. Mostly color curves in DaVinci, added some grain and sharpness in premiere. Used the same grade on all clips. Couldn't get much blue in it, there wasn't much information in the blue channel cause the original image is pretty yellow and shot at high iso. Original clip here. hidalgoserra
seems already a very nice grading imho, the only comments would be to try to show more of the middle/dark areas of the clip as everything between those ranges now its melting a bit too much, maybe trying to under expose with some quick matte the lights of the car, and perhaps i would make everything a bit more sharp as ive seen myself that this create a lot of a cinematic look. Vid-Atlantic
Very impressed with the color grade as well Hidalgo! Good job! Glad to see the lens worked out for you too!
