au8ust
Got this boy for a quite sometime but couldn't have a chance to test it out. The spherical glass inside is Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm T/1.4. Here are some screen grabs captured with Panasonic GH2 camera. All shot wide open @T/1.4 More photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/au8ust/sets/72157632477645242/ Can't wait to try it on a real shoot! Julian
Damn, thats sexy. Must have been expensive... Quite some distortion going on, curious how it will look in a 'real world' test.
au8ust
The best thing I like about this lens is that it's soooooooooooooo sharp at T/1.4! The distortion is not so bad to my eyes. I've tried some Lomo 35mm SF lenses and they are about the same.
tony wilson
no lomo bullshit proper motion picture optic good enough for vittorio storaro one of the greatest dp's in the history of movies. also used on this rather tasty looking film. https://vimeo.com/58336477 Francisco Rios and jgharding

tony wilson
Damn, thats sexy. Must have been expensive... Quite some distortion going on, curious how it will look in a 'real world' test. the zeiss spherical part is the only computer designed part of the system shiga of japan was 2 brothers cutting cylindrical anamorphic optics by hand mainly for jdc and technovision. many mathematical calculations done the old way with an abacus. original anamorphic designs would have been with spherical english cooke speed panchro optics recipes going back nearly 100 years. cooke are probably the greatest optics ever made for the movies and probably the simplest design. introducing more complex faster zeiss optics into a hand made anamorphic system with different focal length without a super computer redesign will sometimes make for a less than perfect optic. panavision in the early 90s in canada designed a more perfect lens using military super computers of the time. boring optics. hand grinding any optic is a dead art it is surprising distortion is not worse. itimjim
I thought Thierry Arbogast DP'd Leon, as he did Fifth Element too? Could be confuddled, it wouldn't be the first time :). Love Leon (and Fifth Element too).

I've subscribed to your Vimeo group too, thanks. Back to Storaro...Apocolypse Now vs The Last Emperor? I'm leaning to the latter, but I love them both so much. Visually The Last Emperor blows me away every single time I watch it.
tony wilson
Storaro is was just to good.. most directors find it impossible to work with people like him. he has more insight more vision to intellectual. gordon willis and sascha vierny also. directors want yes men not men that say that idea is not good man : ) you need to be talented and strong to employ such talented beasts. Apocolypse Now vs The Last Emperor tricky how about this beauty a masterclass that has been copied by many directors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na1gLSHM0N8 Francisco Rios
itimjim
Beautiful. I loved the movies of the 70s and 80s. It's when stories were actually told. That's not to say current films aren't enjoyable, just that I find the modern style tries to gratify the audience with each shot to add drama, when actually the screen is just a stage and the story and performances should drive the drama.
