In the meantime I almost finished my stabilized remote head and made first tests. Now I need to add the third axis and a second bearing support and do some work on the steadicam jib arm. The third axis is going to use a gear motor until the 3 axis open source controller for brushless motors is available. Will post some raw material when I'm ready.

The camera was handheld and passed from one operator to another or connected to cablecam trollies ascending from street level, through the building and at the other side again on a cablecam and above the street.Together there were two flights with cablecam systems and the rig was connected with a magnet to the trollies for fast coupling. this is how a shot is made using Movi.

Hello again,

we plan to offer our handheld brushless stabilizers soon. There will be a version for cameras around 2 kg, one for cameras up to 5 kg, like the Red Epic and we also build a stabilized head for cameras up to 10 kg, to be used on a steadicam arm or easyrig. The mid sized version is the most advanced in the moment. This is a test with 5 kg weight including camera and brass weights:

I think the concept is really clever, and it seems to work great, but like most on this forum, we won't be able to buy this, and since it is something that is supposed to replace shots done very often, renting it doesn't seem all that viable either. Don't get me wrong, someone who can afford a Red w/all the expensive accessories probably don't complain about the price, but aiming a $7500 version to GH3 owners, that's odd considering it is 5 times the price of the camera.. I'd say, keep the 15K for the large version, but the small one needs to be no  more than $2k to have "mass" appeal.

We plan to offer the Porta Head 2 for cameras up to 2 kg at about 3.000 Euro and the bigger version shown in the video for 7.000 Euro. This one is called the Porta Head 5 as it carries around 5 kg, like a Red Epic with a lightweight Remote Focus. We'll keep you updated here or on http://www.portahead.de

Andreas, thanks. This makes it at least in the ballpark of what a much larger group could see themselves invest. (I know it is easy to spend 500-800 for a stabilizer, and if you need a good vest+arm, that can be a lot more. )

I made a short video with footage from recent tests and projects with the Porta Head 2 and 5 prototypes. The footage is not stabilized in post to show the actual results of the gimbal. More footage will follow soon and also a test with the gimbal combined with the steadicam.

The idea that because the camera costs X, anything else should cost Y is an impossible mission for manufacturers. Look at cinema grade lenses.... They can be upwards of $100k for the very best.

 

If i had $10k for equipment.... I'd rather have a GH3, some lighting and one of these gizmos than a Scarlet with a tripod.

I have the GH3 and the BeSteady One 3 axis stabiliser. Very happy with that. 

 

Cameras get replaced all the time. Lenses and other gear, not so much.
