Live coverage - Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera

• CVP are taking pre-orders and claim Blackmagic are again aiming for start of July with the new Production and Pocket Cinema Cameras.

• The Production Camera is expected to be EF mount. No mirrorless or Micro Four Thirds version. The mount on the Pocket Camera will be active M43 and compatible with Panasonic & Olympus lenses.


• Blackmagic's website is down (possibly due to high traffic), just as the official press release was due to be published

1. Shoots slow mo

2. Bigger sensor

3. Takes photos

 

If you want to take photos with the M43 lenses you use with your BMPCC, and get the bonus of a decent B cam that can be used for slow motion work, then yes. 

But it needs a price drop yesterday.

 

Although, let's not forget that if you're so inclined, you can go to a store and take home a GH3 today. BMD have a lot to prove.

The GH3 is mass produced. Blackmagic's cameras not yet.

 

But they certainly point to the future and Canon, Panasonic, Sony, etc. will have to step up drastically if they want to have any part of this market...

According to John Brawley the Pocket Cam will get losless compressed DNG:

 

Currently the prototype camera I have records only in ProRes 422 @ 10 bit, just like the BMCC. The plan is to add a NEW compressed RAW implementation of DNG. The spec allows for this be lossless (not lossy) and at 1.5:1 – 1.2-:1.

 

The stills won't be much good on the pocket cam either. That is a downside for me, I'll have to buy a seperate stills camera, or hold on to my Canon 5D Mark 1.

Yessir. Anything adaptable to other M4/3 cameras is also adaptable to this.

Doing nothing is a response. Sony's cheapest 4K camera, the FS700, will cost at least three times as much when upgraded to 4K. Canon inexplicably seems enamored with 8-bit codecs, except for their raw option, which is only 10-bit. And Panasonic's only 4K camera is a small-sensor prosumer model. If and when they release their 4K VariCam, expect it to cost between the Sony F5 and F55 and have no raw option.
