Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 5, 2017 Administrators Share Posted September 5, 2017 With the new firmware 2.0 update, the Panasonic GH5 becomes the first 5K 10bit H.265 mirrorless camera, and you don't even need an anamorphic lens to join the party. johnnymossville
I really like how Panasonic is giving us things like this. Thank you Panasonic. Seriously. Eno
Marcio Kabke Pinheiro
Great for post stabilizing in 16:9, too. Cas1 and markoconnell
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 5, 2017 Author Administrators Share Posted September 5, 2017 Yes, going to be good for warp stabiliser. With Dual IS, 5 axis IBIS and Warp, maybe we won't need that £1000 tripod Flowtech 75 after all salim, andrgl, m0fe and 4 others
Vesku
If using 30P GH5 has already better resolution 5.2k video mode (5184 x 3456). Can someone play these super sharp HEVC files smoothly?
mkabi
As I said before... this is definitely blowing my mind...
jpfilmz
I really don't see anything that can compete with the GH5. For about $2000 + the cost of a speedbooster you have a incredibly power tool that is mobile AND has excellent in body stabilization. After renting the GH5 and seeing the 400mb codec and not the 5k open-gate...I look at my canon gear with contempt. All except for the 5DMK3 but only due to the magic lantern team. markoconnell
Don Kotlos
@Andrew Reid Do you think you can put in a word to the Panasonic team for baking in LUTs? It will be amazing for quick turnaround projects, with much better color control than Cinelike or picture profiles from Sony. Not that they haven't made an excellent product as is... Dave Del Real
Nice, but it's 10 bit 4.2.0? Not 4.2.2?
ntblowz
For the first time I am tempted to get 5K Retina Imac to enjoy the full resolution jonpais, Andrew Reid and Mat Mayer

This is a very good suggestion. LUT folder on the memory card. Menu on the camera to select them. Job done. 8 minutes ago, Vesku said: How can you enjoy these 5k videos? i think no computer can play those smoothly. Once converted to 5K ProRes they're smooth as butter. jonpais and deezid
Vesku
What is the bitrate of 5k prores? I think it is not best for 5k family videos
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 5, 2017 Author Administrators Share Posted September 5, 2017 You get to choose... You can encode it to 10Mbit H.264 for YouTube if you want, it's up to you. With ProRes you get to choose between the different bitrate flavours, like LT, Proxy, etc... HEVC doesn't play But yes I agree it will be nice to see whether the new Kaby Lake CPUs with supposedly hardware decoding of 10bit HEVC actually work. MediaMan
Andrew, can you keep going past 16:9 and impose 2.35 or 2.40 crop marks too? That would be a 5k-wide "poor man's anamorphic" solution, albeit without the full anamorphic look and artifacts.
Dan Sherman
Andrew, can you post an open gate sample file?

Pascal GPUs will decode HEVC like butter, provided you use the right program for playback. The default Windows 10 video app will decode 10 bit 8k 360 video without even breaking a sweat. But Premiere Pro does not take advantage of that.
AnotherDave
How much better is the final resolution of 5k 200mbps vs 4k 400mpbs? I wouldn't imagine that there would be a huge difference. Plus isn't it 8bit? Or is it 10bit?

Yep that's why we need the hevc files so we can test what works and what doesn't. Resolve also doesn't use HW decoding while FCPX does. No Pascal there so we need the CPU support.. 5 minutes ago, AnotherDave said: How much better is the final resolution of 5k 200mbps vs 4k 400mpbs? The intraframe highbitrate codec should offer an advantage in high motion scenes (waves) , heavy grades or low light shots. Both are 10 bit.
