Recorded audio too loud -- anything to be done?

Yeah, shit happens - ideally, just once

It's not too bad, just a little bit of voice creaking when the interviewee spoke at her loudest. Is there any way to fix/improve this, or do I have to live with it? Using FCPX and Audacity.

It depends on the distortion you got but the following video should be a good general guideline. Now I know you don't have audition but you can get a trial version if it is an one time thing

I have played with de-clip way back when and it could do pretty neat stuff, so I imagine it would work well now. Not sure if there exist any free alternatives tho.

Izotope Rx. That'll fix it. Good tool to have on hand overall. Worth buying, imho.

There is a pretty good VST plugin called ReLife by Terry West. Version 1.42 you can find as freeware around the internet. For version 1.5 you have to make a 10 Euro donation at his website.

The de-clip plugin from Izotope is amazing; works wonders on slightly clipped audio files.
