Ed_David
First apologies to starting this thread - I know there is another one - but that seems to focus on the iphone x as a phone. This is about using it and h.265 to record. And possibly log or raw out of it. H.265 is no joke - as I have seen with the NX1, and with apple supporting it, you can bet your donuts they will make it easy to integrate and convert. And a wide angle and a telephoto lens, with an optical zoom. This could be a useful camera in the field if you need to pick up a shot. Curious about dynamic range, singal to noise, color fidelity, skintones, motion cadence - all that fun stuff Here are the specs: 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras Wide-angle: ƒ/1.8 aperture Telephoto: ƒ/2.4 aperture Optical zoom; digital zoom up to 10x Portrait mode Portrait Lighting (beta) Dual optical image stabilization Six‑element lens Quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync Panorama (up to 63MP) Sapphire crystal lens cover Backside illumination sensor Hybrid IR filter Autofocus with Focus Pixels Tap to focus with Focus Pixels Live Photos with stabilization Wide color capture for photos and Live Photos Improved local tone mapping Body and face detection Exposure control Noise reduction Auto HDR for photos Auto image stabilization Burst mode Timer mode Photo geotagging Image formats captured: HEIF and JPEG 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps 720p HD video recording at 30 fps Optical image stabilization for video Optical zoom; 6x digital zoom Quad-LED True Tone flash Slo‑mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps Time‑lapse video with stabilization Cinematic video stabilization (1080p and 720p) Continuous autofocus video Body and face detection Noise reduction Take 8MP still photos while recording 4K video Playback zoom Video geotagging Video formats recorded: HEVC and H.264 JazzBox
JurijTurnsek
A smartphone cannot "kill" an action camera. Totally different tools. I dear you to use is with a clip-on fisheye and strap it on any helmet. /thread Cinegain, iamoui, tweak and 1 other
Axel
People miss one thing here: the dawning of HDR. They say the display is capable of HDR (whatever that means). HDR metadata can be embedded in HEVC (check). New Apple TV advertizes "4k HDR now! (check). 2017 iMacs deliver 800 nits (check). High Sierra will use HEVC as the new standard compressor (check). As I understood, right now there is no real standard for HDR. Apple may have made the decision. Ed_David, Jonesy Jones and jonpais
Tim Sewell
Looking forward to watching hipsters jumping off cliffs into azure seas with their $1000 iPhones on selfie sticks, later telling the insurance company that renowned DoP @Ed_David 'said it was a GoPro killer'. Snowfun
"This could be a useful camera in the field if you need to pick up a shot" ignoring the "GoPro killer" tag, Ed's comment above remains valid?

Ed_David
Yea sorry I meant go pro because of the ultra wide angle lens and small sensor size to match go-pro's size. But yea, the iphone x camera could be pretty amazing - making the high price tag more justifiable.
JurijTurnsek
iphone wide angle is the same as all other smartphone cameras (really, all of them) - the only GoPro equivalent fisheye-wide cameras can be found on LG G5, G6, V20 and V30 ... this thread is a mess Cinegain
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted September 14, 2017 Administrators Share Posted September 14, 2017 HDR codec and HDR10 display will make a difference. Is the H.265 10bit? 4K 60fps on a phone proves heat can be managed in such a thin device, and that Canon with their shitty DSLRs have no excuses remaining. dhessel
While I ultimately agree with you i think it should be pointed that the surface are of the sensor in the iPhone is over 50 times smaller than a full frame Canon making it much easier to cool. tweak, Samin and That Guy
Liszon
I am wondering about the bit depth as well. There was a rumor saying 10bits, don't know what's the final spec.
Phil A
I wonder how much good "10bit HDR" capable screens will do when people use the phone in bright daylight, plus they're still tiny. Only like the iPhone 8 plus out of the new announcement. Legitimately considering to say fuck it and buy a Samsung Galaxy S8+ Duos instead, it's way cheaper already (can get the S8+ Duos for 825$ equivalent while the iPhone 8 plus will pre-order for 995$ here) and for most things I wonder if there is any difference in performance. Ed_David
https://petapixel.com/2017/09/11/times-latest-cover-photos-shot-iphone/ Curious to see how the images stack against each other. DXOmark is testing mobile cameras. Google Pixel looks like the one to beat right now: https://www.dxomark.com/category/mobile-reviews/
JurijTurnsek
Any phone can shoot amazing stuff if you light it properly (get exposure to base ISO). DXO is a poor benchmark. Study studio scene comparisons and come to you own conclusions. Ed, you are killing me. iamoui and Cinegain

It took them one year to review the iPhone 7 Plus, and they still rated it lower than the pixel. HOW?? This is from their own test:

On average, the Pixels produce better images. That is across multiple testing sites not just DXO. Here is one: https://www.theverge.com/2016/10/18/13304476/google-pixel-vs-iphone-7-samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-camera-comparison Now if most of the time you use the zoom function, the 7+ is probably better choice.
