First apologies to starting this thread - I know there is another one - but that seems to focus on the iphone x as a phone.  This is about using it and h.265 to record.  And possibly log or raw out of it.

H.265 is no joke - as I have seen with the NX1, and with apple supporting it, you can bet your donuts they will make it easy to integrate and convert.

And a wide angle and  a  telephoto lens, with an optical zoom.

This could be a useful camera in the field if you need to pick up a shot.

Curious about dynamic range, singal to noise, color fidelity, skintones, motion cadence - all that fun stuff

Here are the specs:

Telephoto: ƒ/2.4 aperture

Optical zoom; digital zoom up to 10x

People miss one thing here: the dawning of HDR.

They say the display is capable of HDR (whatever that means). HDR metadata can be embedded in HEVC (check). New Apple TV advertizes "4k HDR now! (check). 2017 iMacs deliver 800 nits (check). High Sierra will use HEVC as the new standard compressor (check).

As I understood, right now there is no real standard for HDR. Apple may have made the decision.

HDR screens already implemented and supported by Netflix and Amazon on LG G6 and Samsung S8.

HDR codec and HDR10 display will make a difference. Is the H.265 10bit?

4K 60fps on a phone proves heat can be managed in such a thin device, and that Canon with their shitty DSLRs have no excuses remaining.

I wonder how much good "10bit HDR" capable screens will do when people use the phone in bright daylight, plus they're still tiny.

Only like the iPhone 8 plus out of the new announcement. Legitimately considering to say fuck it and buy a Samsung Galaxy S8+ Duos instead, it's way cheaper already (can get the S8+ Duos for 825$ equivalent while the iPhone 8 plus will pre-order for 995$ here) and for most things I wonder if there is any difference in performance.

DXOmark is testing mobile cameras.

Google Pixel looks like the one to beat right now:

DXO is a joke for smart phones. It took them one year to review the iPhone 7 Plus, and they still rated it lower than the pixel. HOW?? This is from their own test:

That example was with the zoom function of 7+.

On average, the Pixels produce better images. That is across multiple testing sites not just DXO. Here is one: https://www.theverge.com/2016/10/18/13304476/google-pixel-vs-iphone-7-samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-camera-comparison

Now if most of the time you use the zoom function, the 7+ is probably better choice.
