Hello!

I have new stills from a recent shot I was DPing. It's another theme, Kinda of game of thrones thing ?. I think this is a good point of reference to see how color look in this type of forest/swamp with those costumes and production design. Here i used some old vintage Takumar lenses because of the organic look they have, i think they help to sell the fantasy theme.

I use the same procedure I always do, and my style of grade using GHa Daylight to LogC. And diffusion LOT of diffusion!

Great shots, nice colors. Production design also looking really good.

I am curious what Takumars you used here. As I have been on market for a nice Takumar set because what I have seen so far from these lenses I really like what I see. I already own full cine converted FD set but Takumars has own color and look for sure :)

I have a 50 f1.4, really sharp wide open, but not acutance. I have used the 35mm f2 in the past, its excellent but hard to find. The only problem with my 50mm is that when you stop it down color start to vary every stop, its prone to go more to a yellow tint.

I’ve been visiting this site for about 5 years now and this is some of the best color grading I have seen from anyone  on this site!!!

This is great work. What diffusion filters are you using?

I used Tiffen black pro mist in the past, but more and more often im opting for using diffusion in post production. Except for some very minor thing i found no difference in using diffusion in post, and you got  the advantage of adjusting it shot by shot.

This was a very tight production, and time was short. So I decided to shot very clean and then finish in post. Although the vintage Pentax glass has some very particular look.

What's your post diffusion workflow if you don't mind me asking?

Diffusion interests me a lot but I don’t know how much it would help my 5D3 Raw footage. It already starts off fairly soft but if I’m using a more modern lens, I’ll use a cheaper Variable ND. I find the Bower brand to be great for this. It takes the edge off the modern clinical look but doesn’t affect the Sharpness too much and is still fairly neutral.

Did you use a speedbooster with your Takumar lenses?

Ah! Yeah I'd be really happy to learn more about your post workflow for diffusion, I always find it a little bit fake...

Yeah, was it with SB or straight?

@Sage I have swapped over from the 4K modes to the 6K Open Gate mode on the GH5 as that mode has some great advantages, including less sharpening.

Are you planning to update your instructions with new 'softening' parameters to match the sharpness of the Alexa?  This mode seems pretty great (h265, 5K 4:3 image for anamorphic or cropping in post, less sharpening) so it would be useful to have those settings as a reference ???

"6K" mode limits you to 4:2:0 though. Is the little extra resolution worth it?

I will try answer you both. I think that to make it realistic it all came down to "order of operation". If you add a diffusion fx in post, make it to be in the very first step of the chain, or at least after the WB/exposure corrections. The grading, look and fxs have to come after that.

raw footage ▶️ Diffusion ▶️ corrections ▶️ secondary corrections ▶️ grading/look/ mastering

or

raw footage ▶️  corrections ▶️ secondary corrections ▶️ Diffusion ▶️grading/look/ mastering

Tiffen has it's Dfx plugins witch are really nice, but i also use the Red Giant Looks diffusion, those look great also. Oh! and make sure you are working on 32bit color space.

Yes. I use the Viltrox EF-m2 its way cheaper. Also, it's a tiny bit softer than the Metabones, but for my taste it helps to reduce the super sharpness of Panasonic cameras.

It also lowers (disables?) the sharpening, enables h265 200mbps codec which reduced file sizes and SD card costs (the 400mbps codec for 4K requires UHS-II cards that cost a fortune), so there are tradeoffs in both directions.

I'm not convinced I'll swap over permanently, but folks who do anamorphic shooting may be very interested in the GHa LUTs combined with that anamorphic look.  The GH5 is great value for money, but if you want to shoot 10-bit anamorphic with de-squeeze and without an external monitor it becomes the bargain of the century, and the Alexa colour combined with the big-screen aesthetic would be a spectacular match.

Have you found the reduced sharpening noticeable? Is the H265 200mbps All-i? The only thing I dislike is the framing is off if you don't shoot anamorphic, though it gives you the cropping advantage

I haven't really tested it, but there was a comparison pic here by @jase:

The 5K isn't All-I, but if you're shooting anamorphic there's a 3.3K 4:3 10-bit 422 10-bit 400Mbps All-I mode that might be of interest, and it supports HLG too, and remember that it's 400mbps h265 so may be better than h264.  Long-GOP h265 gets about 2x efficiency compared to h264 but I'm not sure about All-I.  3.3K might even match the Alexa better than the normal 4K mode.

I should do a comparison video.

I wouldn't mind seeing a comparison video.
