Damphousse
Did you read the thread about how ALL modern Intel chip based computers are going to have to be intentionally crippled in the coming weeks and take up to a 30% performance hit? You may want to let the dust settle on this thing before buying a computer. All current benchmarks are meaningless. We will have to see how computers are affected by the rewrite of the Windows and Mac OS kernel code. Kernel-memory-leaking Intel processor design flaw forces Linux, Windows redesign Performance hits loom, other OSes need fixes
Dustin
I did read that. I don’t quite understand it but very frightening!
Dustin
If anyone is interested/has any opinions, below are my final choices for a new laptop/desktop build all around the same $1000 give or take (if you include a monitor for the desktop build and other accessories). https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KVCNJV https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1367633-REG/dell_i7577_7722blk_i7_7700hq_16gb_1tb.html (alternatively, a used XPS15)
Dustin
Alright minor changes made. My revised desktop vs laptop options: see the two: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/itwinky/saved/vP3M8d https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1367633-REG/dell_i7577_7722blk_i7_7700hq_16gb_1tb.html Would I notice a huge difference in performance for $300 more on the desktop? (Minus the fact that the custom desktop is way more future upgradable) I realize again this is like comparing apples to oranges but I want to make sure I’m getting good stuff for the money. silvertonesx24
I'm in a similar situation, in the next few months I will be on the road much more and would like something that can handle 4k video editing and Element 3D after effects. I'm interesting in exploring Ryzen 7 solutions, but I'm unsure if leaving the nvidia/CUDA world will be OK as far as video and AE goes. Any opinions on a good Ryzen and GPU laptop? sondreg
You can save a some bucks on RAM and gpu, without any real loss in performance https://pcpartpicker.com/product/ghs8TW/crucial-ballistix-sport-lt-16gb-1-x-16gb-ddr4-2400-memory-bls16g4d240fse -25$ https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gL98TW/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-g1-gaming-video-card-gv-n1060g1-gaming-6gd -120$ I would drop the extra CPU cooling fan and opt for a Ryzen 7 1700 instead of the ryzen 5 (the included fan is great!) I haven't overclocked mine (even though I probably could, and should've done a long time ago) +30$ You'd save 155$ and have 8 cores instead of 6. Also make sure you have some redudancy in your power supply, + get one thats modular, think it'll only be like 10$ different. I'd recommend you'd invest in a good monitor, Dell Ultrasharps are relatively cheap for what they do. edit: removed something about the mobo, didnt notice the rebate https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vL3QCy
