a good idea to do a limited release to showcase the power of the Samsung processor, purely as a promotional tool to promote Samsung smartphone sales!

Exactly this! If Samsung managers were clever, they should know, that this market is economically a disaster, as there will be more digital imaging companies to die during the next years. Plus they completely shut down the service infrastructure after retiring 2014 - one of most important (and expensive) factors in nowadays consumer world.

Though, even in the automotive industry, many companies develop prototypes or concept cars never going out to market. They simply use one or more top technologies to put them in other cars/parts brought to markets.

Didn't Samsung get sued by Canon over patents?

Isn't this why the NX1 was "abandoned"?

I haven't heard this? Sources?

But just because NX2 resurrection is a non-starter doesnt mean that they are not developing the sensor. Why should Samsung leave the high end image sensor market up to Sony especially as they know that Nikon and Canon dont particularly like sourcing from one of their competitors (Canon uses Sony's 1 inch sensor.) Canon and Nikon would be bonkers not to put this tech and this sort of sensor into their mirrorless offerings. And quite frankly from Samsung's perspective, these sensors in Canikon bodies will show off their smartphone 'image sensor' tech far more than any fleeting interest in an NX2.

Yeah, I would rate as another slim possibility is the "NX2" never gets sold but just was a test bed for development of a new APS-C sensor to sell to Canon / Nikon (or heck even Fujifilm, or Pentax? Maybe maybe even a small player like BMD or Kinefinity etc)

Yeah but my hope is the "NX2" is a prototype they at least bother to put out to market, even if it is without any supporting new lenses or any high street stock supply etc...

This is only a rumor I heard at NAB.

Fact: Sony makes the dual pixel sensors on Samsung smart phones.

Rumor: Sony phase detection AF adopts Canon patents that they use on Canon's dual pixel system. Rumor has it that Sony and Canon TRADED patent rights to each other. Sony gave Canon "Exmor," on sensor, column A/D conversion patents for the rights for usage of Canon's dual pixel patent.

Sony call theirs "PDAF" for Sony branded cameras but its based on that Canon patent.

About a year after this deal was rumored to be done, Sony released the A6300 which was their first gen PDAF.

Take that for whatever you think its worth. It may be nothing but it could be something.....

  • Full frame, 24MP (6000 x 4000), with clean ISO 12,800
  • 6K video in both H.264 and H.265 format, with further option for ALL-I and paid upgrade to ProRes 422 LT
  • Nikon flat profile
  • IBIS
  • At least 240fps in 2.5K... 4K 120p would be nice too :)
  • Huge battery in the main body grip, without need to extend size of camera with vertical grip. Make literally the entire grip a battery (like Hasselblad).
  • NX1 inspired ergonomics and control layout
  • Nikon colour science but updated for Rec2020 and HDR standards - wider colour gammut
  • Dual Pixel AF with robust tracking - even with EF mount adapter
  • No F-mount nonsense - do a shallow flange like E-mount for adaptability
  • Wide range of fast primes and official adapter for F mount
  • Nikon logo, understated pro design... but not retro hipster bullshit Df style plastic affair! NX1 or Leica SL style please!

Even with this crazy specs they can't get considerable market share. At best case scenario it will eat their own D750 lunch.

So long as Nikon also has great usability (waveforms like GH5 has would be nice, and ability to punch in for focus while recording, that sort of stuff) and launches with an excellent Nikon F / "New_Mount" adapter, then this camera will be a rock star and sell like hotcakes. As the Nikon name still has a substantial amount of pulling power.

For sure that NX2 will come out in the same day of Breccia's Canon GX9 MKIII.

No way that this camera is real. Even not considering the unreal specs, creating a camera to promote the Galaxy S9 would be insane - most of the smartphone users don't give a damn for traditional cameras.

If Samsung wished that, making a ultimate vlogger camera would make much more sense - a 1" sensor with Dual Pixel, small form factor, foldable LCD, mic input, 4k120p, good fixed lens. Throw a new and easy way to connect the camera with with S9 (or even use the Exynos modem in the camera) to share fotos, and you have a winner with a much lesser cost and much more target to the intended audience.

This would make sense in some ways - Canon now have column A/D on the 1D X Mark II (and maybe others, not sure)

It doesn't make sense in other ways...

"PDAF" is not the same as Dual Pixel AF which splits the pixel in half. Sony's "PDAF" replaces the entire pixel with a standard phase detect pixel (focus pixels).

Also, Sony had phase-detect pixels on their sensors before the A6300. A7R II for instance, 2 years beforehand.

Well? The patents could be complicated. Maybe Sony only needed a "portion" of Canon's patent. They both share a basic concept of wafeform phase cancelation analysis. I can only guess that this basic concept can create a few different highways for taking it in different directions. I dont know how old that rumor really is. It might have already been a year old before it was told to me at NAB.

If Canon is doing on-sensor column A/D conversion and Sony hasnt sued them yet? Hmm...that adds a bit more stregenth to the rumor. This patented function is supposedly a key part of Exmor.

Who knows for sure. These moves are supposed to be "hush hush" and the few people that DO know are under NDAs...or maybe its nothing?

I think that today, most of us believe that Dual Pixel and PDAF are supposedly different but seem to have almost identicle overall performance.

On the cell phone side, Sony sensors DO advertise "Dual Pixel" AF. They are not marketed as Sony "PDAF".

If these crossovers were NOT done with an agreement than both sides could have grounds for patent infringements.

Hmmm....

I was this close || to buying in on the NX1, but bought a GH4 body instead...

It’s not the first time, because they got sued by Apple a couple of times for stealing their tech.

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/technology/2014/mar/31/apple-sues-samsung-for-2bn

But that didn’t stop them from continuing in the cell phone business... then again... 2 billion dollars probably didn’t even touch their total profit margin.

Hmmm... rereading the rumor - it does appear to be in two parts. Part one, is that Samsung has designed/made a very high end (mirrorless) apsc image sensor. A lot of impressive detail in this part of the rumor. Part 2 of the rumor is speculation that this image sensor is going to be utilised in a resurrected NX2 (which sounds pretty unlikely.)

But just because NX2 resurrection is a non-starter doesnt mean that they are not developing the sensor. Yes, prototypes to test tech and demonstrate capabilities to Nikon, Fuji and the m43 world - companies that are all reliant on Sony. Sony's sensor division does huge business, cutting into that pie and eating a competitors lunch makes sense for another giant electronics conglomerate. A NX-whatever simply doesn't in any way.

I quote @Panther

"In 2014 the NX1 did already what no other camera has done since. They downscaled the complete 28MP sensor into 4k video. Even many years later Sony has massive problems doing that with 24MP and other brands are not even trying.
The NX1 was so ground breaking, that you could release it today as an X-T3 or A7000 and it would be a huge step up."

and I quote @secondhalflife "They should rather deliver a firmware update for all the quirks in the original model."

The first one show NX1 as it was, a technological marvel, with soul (like @Andrew Reid described above, the camera feels good in the hand and has great color science with full adjustability), and the second(halflife) show it as a massively flawed try from a TV, air conditioner maker. Obviously the first is closer to reality, because the camera has no software flaws.

Funny rumor though.
