HurtinMinorKey
On the technical side, yes if you work with 4K and/or raw then your macbook pro simply won't cut it anymore. I have an Alienware M17x which is a gaming laptop, with a powerful i7 CPU and soon to be 680m nvidia graphics card. It's great with Adobe Premiere because of the CUDA support. And even with that nice hardware setup, you'll still be bottlenecked by your storage read speeds when trying to edit raw in real-time. You really need a RAID array for editing. You really need a RAID array for editing. Well I have an SSD in my laptop for that, in case my external 7,200rpm USB3 drive can't keep up. Although I haven't tried editing raw just yet. I am going to shoot some footage on my friend's MarkIII and test it this week hopefully. I'll compare SSD versus classic 7,200rpm drive and see how each one fares :)

I'll compare SSD versus classic 7,200rpm drive and see how each one fares :) The internal SSD should be okay, but it obviously comes with limited capacity. 7200rpm is just not fast enough for read times which require>150MB per second to see the raw 2.5K files in real time. I think the max read on the 7200 will be something like 130MB/s, so you will very close if you are working with 1080 from the 5D. But my guess is that you'll still see some stutter. Amro Othman
4K on a laptop? This thread took a turn for the worst. How so dude? If mobility is important then it is totally possible to edit 4K on a laptop- provided you skip stuff like the macbook and go for a recent gaming/ workstation notebook with the correct hardware. The gap between notebook and desktop power isn't that huge these days.
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted May 20, 2013 Author Administrators Share Posted May 20, 2013 You can edit 4K red footage on a laptop, but a lot of people use laptops where they could be using much more powerful hardware, then they complain raw is a pain to edit. All the time people clamour for image quality and then they get it they claim they don't need it. Maybe raw doesn't need them :) Sean Cunningham

markm
Maybe there is an advantage for colour correction in 4k before you downsize to 2k or are you saying you want to make a film in 4k I think vimeo are making a 4k channel but what use is that when all laptop displays as far as I know are far less than that and how could you monitor 4k on a laptop screen and if you could would there be any advantage? As an indie film maker to get a film made in 2k is an incredible ask to do it in 4k seems like a ton of work for no reason as distributers would want your film in 2k. My TV is for the most part standard pal defination. There are some HD channels and the future But 4k is still a long way away and again will anyone be able to see a discernable difference in a normal sized living room and do people really want to see actors pores lines and spots in minute detail? Many female actors dread HD let alone 4k Maybe you can edit 4k on a laptop but is there actually a point to doing it and so far my camera of choice is the BMC 4k. Julian
If you have the time, and the gear, why not 4K? There are going to be more and more 4K tv's and computer monitors in the next years. At least you're future proof that way.

All the time people clamour for image quality and then they get it they claim they don't need it. Maybe raw doesn't need them :) RED raw footage comes with quicktime proxies at different resolutions, you can edit them pretty much on any computer, and still be referencing the original raw files, it's a different thing, but definitely a paradigm worth adapting to the "indie" raw workflow. Computers have come a long way, but editing raw is still not quite there, especially at 4k. Grading all the footage and transcoding before editing is also not an ideal workflow, as most of the grading should depend on continuity. tomekk
Might be a good solution for portable powerful pc-laptop? nahua
Just a word of advice... Please use Vimeo for future uploads, no more YouTube mush. Compress very lightly to H.264 and make sure this file is downloadable via Vimeo. I recommend at least 24Mbit VBR, 50MBit max. Sorry. I just haven't had much luck with Vimeo. I don't have a PLUS account, wondering if it'll improve the quality of my vids. I uploaded these to the regular Vimeo account and they came out as 480P? WTH? I thought Vimeo downsized 1080P to 720P, but they don't even show up as HD. Not really happy about the quality on YT either. I wish there was a better way to showcase these videos. It's not as portable as laptop but can't complain if I can save 1800 while still it's kind of semi-portable. I've just tried laptop from your link. Just changed to fastest graphic card and fastest non extreme CPU and it's around 2800USD (and it's still weaker obviously cause they're mobile versions). I'm pretty sure this thing that looks awful for you cost around 1200USD in the USA. So yeah it's not as nice as sager but I'd rather save 1600USD. Chris Santucci
As of today, I have a MK3 that records raw as far as I can tell. Photoshop indicates the DNG files are 8bit, but they sure don't act like 8bit image files. Anyone else seeing this?

letusa_play
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to simultaneously record a sequence of images on both cards in the Mark III? I think this could be a solution to reach larger image resolutions. You could spend 12 images to SD and 12 images to the CF from every second of shots. Thanks Neksus
