DBounce
NAB was a blast. Just got back and wanted to share a quick video of my experience from a quick hands on with the Kinefinity cameras. I also had a chance to check out the Atlas Lens Co. Orions series of anamorphic primes. I have never seen so much camera related tech in one place. It was a great experience and I can whole heartedly recommend it to anyone in this group as a must do event. Check out the video below. I will post more as time allows. Feel free to post comments or questions. tupp and Cinegain

Just a tiny quibble is with your saying it is reported that these are rehoused projector lenses. Those are not reports, they rumors spread solely on this website by a handful of individuals. I heard about that from a rep from a major European distributor. I think it’s safe to say it’s no rumor.

In any case, you heard some gossip from one unnamed individual - that is not very substantial. Is this person privy to the design and manufacturing process? Does he know something dozens of reputable industry professionals who’ve handled and tested these lenses don’t know?

Always important to consider where the source of the "info" is coming from.

Nothing top secret about it, but I’ll have to dig for a business card. Not that it matters, to my eyes the lenses produce a nice image. The bigger issue is they certainly don’t feel built like $8k -$9k lenses. Perhaps this will change? In any case 2018 is said to be the year that anamorphic get affordable, so that’s pretty positive. I did not get to try these on my cameras. They said they would have EF mount lenses at Cinegear and invited me to check them out. I’m simply reporting what I learned. IMO, DJI was the best at that show. Loved the Ronin S. It will be a instant buy for me. Follow focus and controls work with Panasonic cameras. Sony and others coming soon. 2 minutes ago, IronFilm said: But was it real, or FUD aimed at the competitor? Always important to consider where the source of the "info" is coming from. Does it matter? The imagery was good regardless of weather it’s a projector lens or not. I doubt that the audience will care.
jonpais
@DBounce Yes, it matters! Tito Ferradans is someone I can trust; who knows as much or more about anamorphic than anybody: yet he hasn’t come forward and accused Dan Kanes of lying when he says these lenses are a new design. tupp
I asked the guy in the Atlas booth if the optics were original, and he said that everything was made from scratch. @DBounce NIce video! jonpais

jonpais
@IronFilm Lens designers don't manufacture the glass. Still waiting for DBounce to reveal his source as he promised he would.

tweak
It is most certainly a rumour unless proven otherwise. I see no evidence what so ever to suggest they are re-housed projection lenses... Atlas even provided us with early stage prototyping videos where he's grinding his own glass. jonpais
jonpais
The combined filmography of the handful of cinematographers on the Sharegrid website who champion the Atlas Orion anamorphics numbers in the hundreds, including the endorsement of Christopher Probst, director of photography on two episodes of the highly acclaimed Mindhunter television series, and Matthew Duclos, who has spent half his life in the lens business. These people are not dupes or mouthpieces. If there was any deception involved, they would be the first to spot it and denounce it.

Why is everyone so concerned that these lenses might use projector lenses in part of their assembly. That does not bother me in the slightest. The only thing that bothered me was the weak and spongy stops on the rather light and flimsy feeling focus and aperture gears. The do not feel of high quality. And while I know they are affordable for anamorphic primes, they are still $8000-$9000 lenses. So they should feel solid.

My guess is you are making this all up; that you have some axe to grind; that you conveniently lost the business card and can’t even recall the name of this major distributor you supposedly spoke with. Because you are straight up calling Dan Kanes a liar and seem to think you know more than all the filmmakers who’ve handled these lenses and specialists like Tito. Why don’t you stop spreading malicious gossip? According to your tale, you chatted it up with some anonymous person at NAB who just happens to be an authority on all things anamorphic; and not only that, you didn’t even trouble yourself to do any fact-checking. We get it already - you were disappointed in the build quality and feel the natural human desire to lash out at somebody. That's like totally understandable, man. But this isn't a rumors site. Maybe fb would be more appropriate. Better still, why don't you confront Dan Kanes face-to-face? Any coward can post shit on the internet. I do not make things up, I merely shared what I was told. Also, calling me a coward? I don't recall attacking you personally... oh, and I'm on the internet. So I think everyone can see that's not my style. Not sure why projector lens parts is such an issues? The imagery looks good from these lenses. Even edge sharpness is good. Blows away those SLR Magic Anamorphic Primes. My only issue is paying $24k for a set if the focus and aperture gears are prone to breaking. FYI: I emailed Dan, so he can clarify the situation. Edit: just heard back from Dan, he said there is zero truth to the rumor, and that they could not manage to produce thousands of lenses using recycled parts. As for the focus and aperture gears, he said the samples at NAB were near final preproduction models, but end stop feel and cam speed will be far slower and smoother. So there you have the official response from Atlas Lens Co.

You never spoke with a major distributor in the first place. And Dan Kanes already settled this matter to my satisfaction in an email to me last year. That's simply what I was told at the show. I never claimed it as fact. I only reported what I was told. I had never heard of this rumor until I attended the show. You like calling me a liar? Was it not you that said throwing insults anonymously over the internet is what cowards do? Also if no one has ever mentioned this rumor beside me, why did you have a conversation about it with Dan a year ago? Do you think the average Joe knows anything about Atlas? Now ask yourself if it's likely anyone at NAB knew about Atlas. Is it really so unbelievable that someone else at NAB had heard this rumor also?
