Administrators Andrew Reid Posted June 27, 2018 Administrators Share Posted June 27, 2018 Samsung has joined forces with Fujifilm to develop sensor technology and says it will apply the new innovation to a large sensor. salim
I disagree with your conclusions. I think this mostly about mobile phones and perhaps some B2B chip solution. Most likely Samsung Galaxy S10 or S11 will have a class-leading colors and in return Samsung might become a secondary chip supplier to Fuji to help Fuji differentiate vs. Sony 6500-6700, etc. Anything beyond that is just dreaming. You underestimate what it will take for a business to return back to a failed venture that they have closed-down once. NX2 that mostly appeals to DSLR filmmakers is a niche market for Samsung. It just makes no sense. There is no money in it. Samsung wants to compete against Sony in the chip market. Even though it's going to be very competitive against Sony, is still less complicated than building an entire support structure around the world to support Samsung cameras, lenses, etc. ND64

A larger sensor? Ah well, guess that means my Samsung lenses will remain worthless :-/ 1 hour ago, Andrew Reid said: Back in 2015 hardware acceleration (GPU) for H.265 video wasn’t common and OS support hugely lacking. Image quality suffered with choppy pixilated playback, gamma issues, clipped dynamic range and early firmware. That’s all changed in 2018 and the NX1 today is stunning. H.265 feels almost ProRes-like in its image quality and butterly smooth playback. 5 years of HUGE resources culminated in a stunning Super 35mm camera which is still class-leading 4 years later. It is still the only commercially available camera sensor I know of that is capable of 6K at 240fps (source). Of course they didn’t implement this (try compressing that to H.265 and writing to SD card) but it demonstrates an important principal of chip design. Couldn't our fastest SD cards today do 6K H.265? Not when they've got a solid range of APS-C cameras and mirrorless medium format. They've got full frame cornered in on each side. (however I feel it is even less likely Samsung will make their on FF camera)

IronFilm
I assume their medium format lenses however will be able to reach up to cover "full frame" medium format sensors
sanveer
"...Through continuous cooperation with Samsung, we anticipate to bring more meaningful innovation to mobile cameras." That says it all, I guess. This would most likely be only limited to smartphones, and reduce Samsung's dependence on Sony for Smartphone Camera Sensors. A little bit more. DBounce
I would love to see a successor to the NX1, it was a great camera in many ways. But I also remain pessimistic at the prospects of Samsung reentering the premium camera market. My guess is they will sell sensors and also adopt the tech in their smartphones. Super Members BTM_Pix Posted June 27, 2018 Super Members Share Posted June 27, 2018 They've recently released a full frame crop mode (which sounds odd but you know what I mean !) for the GFX50s so they'd argue they've already got a full frame camera. Their next move supposedly is a rangefinder version of it priced in between the GFX and the XPRO-2....Maybe Fotokina? If Fuji did a tie up with Samsung purely to mount the NX1 as is inside of a new dedicated cinema type body with Fuji's film emulations etc then it would have some legs I think. They'll need to do something though because with Sigma doing more lenses for the E-mount, the advantage they had over Sony by having a broader range of more affordable quality lenses is rapidly disappearing so they could struggle with future premium hybrids. This is why "full frame" should never have come to mean what is means (representing 135 format). It was one of the greatest marketing tricks pulled off by Canikon to make "full frame" be part of the popular casual lingo. 46 minutes ago, BTM_Pix said: If Fuji did a tie up with Samsung purely to mount the NX1 as is inside of a new dedicated cinema type body with Fuji's film emulations etc then it would have some legs I think. Hell yes Or partner with Nikon.... Just stick that NX1 sensor and processing power into a cinema body! At affordable prices please. The smallest medium film format, 645, has 2352mm^2, i.e. 172% more surface than 35mm full frame, the more common 6x7 format has 3752mm^2 or 334%. So I stand by my statement that GFX is rather oversized 35mm than medium format. (Actually, it would be 42.5mm film if that existed.) keessie65
Still difficult what to do now. Looking forward to a camera with IBIS, for filming and photographing. A7III, BMPC4K, GH5 are interesting but does not have that extra IMO. The a6700 rumour would be the most exciting replacement for my NX1. Now this news. I think I will wat a few months for upgrading. this was posted 5 days ago, Old news or did this guy knew more a few days ago? iamoui

If you adapt classical medium format lenses to these cameras, the crop is similar to (or even greater than) that of full frame lenses on APS-C and MFT bodies. Damphousse
"Samsung open to new camera system" is a bit click baity. I didn't read anything that indicated NX2 is on the horizon. All the recent press release stated was stuff about cell phone cameras. People really need to let this NX2 thing go. There is no evidence it is going to happen. Transforming a cell phone camera press release into NX2 fan fiction porn is a bit... desperate. 1 hour ago, frontfocus said: Hasselblad calls it medium format, Fuji calls it medium format, Phase One calls it medium format, Pentax calls it medium format, Sony calls it medium format. I shoot medium format film and 645 is like the red headed step child of medium format. I shoot 6x6. And I keep salivating over 6x8 and 6x9 cameras. You offer long time medium format shooters something smaller than 645 and you get the reaction you just witnessed. Sorry. That's just the way it is. Marketing departments can label stuff whatever they want. I mean they can call a Canon Rebel "full frame" if it makes them happy. Doesn't change physics. My only concern is how is this lens going to perform on this body? Oh and the real men and women shoot 4x5 inch and larger! I just haven't made the just to sheet film yet!
