amsh89es335
I pre-ordered the Atomos Ninja V recorder to go with my GH5S. I noticed that Atomos is recommending there HDMI cables to guarantee no issues with 4k 60p. But there $90 and $150 for one HDMI cable. Does anyone know how necessary there hdmi cables are? Is anyone having issues with the other Atomos Recorders at 4k 60p with non Atomos HDMI cables on the GH5 or GH5S? Any recommended HDMI cables brands that are not insanely expensive? interceptor121
Panasonic says you only need am high speed HDMI cable however there are certified premium high speed HDMI cables as well cost around £20 here in UK. There are only three types of HDMI cables standard, high speed and ultra high speed. High speed supports up to 18 gbps and I doubt you need more although hdmi connectors have versions 1.4 2.0b 2.1 the cables do not follow the same logic so don’t get ripped off
jonpais
This from Mystery Box: HDMI Note Your HDMI cables need to support HDMI 2.0 (18Gbps) or higher for 50p or 60p capture. Many inexpensive HDMI cables are not capable of achieving the listed standard speed, so be sure to test any cables you plan on using with the GH5S and the Ninja Inferno to ensure they support 4K 60P / 4K 50P 10bit 4:2:2 transmission. If the cable doesn’t support it, you’ll notice the Ninja Inferno cutting out and flickering during capture, and segmenting the ProRes clips as if you had started and stopped the camera each time. We brought in multiple brands of HDMI cables, and found that the Rocketfish cables gave us the best results.
interceptor121
HDMI cables are not aligned to adapters they are just cables https://www.hdmi.org/consumer/finding_right_cable.aspx Then the build quality may differ but there isn’t a 2.0 cable or 2.1 there is high speed and ultra premium certified are high speed cables with special protection for EMI

interceptor121
What am getting at is that performance wise the amazon cable $5 is the same of $100 gold plated the specs are the same the difference may be in build quality and how rugged the cable is not if it can or not support the data stream or hrmi 1.4 vs 2 or 2.1 so it is not necessary to buy any special cable you just need a high speed HDMI OMARS Premium Certified HDMI Cable 1m Ultra Speed High Support 21Gbps 4k@60Hz (HDMI V2.0b) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MDTOA8R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JeZoBbG2W1AY4 £7.

I don't know about that. Yeah and if it fails right in the middle of a shoot, ehh not so sure about one that cheap. There has to be some middle ground. I thinking about it. interceptor121
HDMI cables are not rocket science and are consumer items so they are cheap it is up to the op to spend $10 for a cable a bit longer than needed or spend $50 for another that may have better ergonomics but has exactly the same performance that reminds me of discussions on analog speakers cables and what a difference they made on hi fi sound quality however HDMI is digital signal so the whole idea that you need to spend a fortune on cables doesn’t really apply to signal quality is more build quality and robustness
webrunner5
Yeah but you can get too damn cheap on stuff. There Has to be a reason it is cheap. I mean you have thousands of bucks tied up and you are going to spend 10 bucks for a HDMI cable?? There is video after video on YT that shows broken HDMI cables and worse, it screwed up you camera HDMI connector. Then you are Really screwed. If you go on the Sony website they say a lot of the cheap USB cables are missing one wire on them. To Only use the Sony stuff to do Firmware updates. And you know what they are right. I just tried to update my Sony A7s Firmware with 3 USB cables I had laying around, none of them name brands and none would work. I went down to Wal Mart and bought a 15 dollar Samsung micro USB cable and it worked the very first time I plugged it in, and the connection was a TON better fit. Wal Mart has some USB cables as cheap as 4 dollars. Probably the same crap I already had. I threw all 3 of the cheap ones in the garbage, and they is what they were, Garbage! amsh89es335
I do not mean $10 cheap. But $90 to $150 for a cable, that is way over priced. They'll break and get lost on shoots, all HDMI cables eventually do. I am trying to be cautious with money, I like to have multiple redundancies as back up for every gear item I own. But when a little item like that can cost me $150 every shoot because of camera crew losing them or breaking them I need to do my homework into ones that make logical economic sense. Reliability and cost effectiveness. I am well aware of cheap are not being safe but in the world of HDMI Cables I am trying to figure out what is cheap and what is not and what is way overpriced because Atomos can market it that way. So if I can just get help with finding alternatives that people have had experience or know of some reviews that have been made would be much appreciated than being off topic about people being to cheap and being screwed. Can we turn this post into a useful productive list for known HDMI cables to be reliable and work with Atomos Recorders at 4k 60p with the GH5 and GH5s. Also that would be between 1.5ft to 3ft and not cost $150. Here I can start the list here from what I have learned and people can build upon it based off of there own experience or reviews they share. Lets not just based it off of specs listed from unknown amazon brands and argue about them. At the top we have the Atomos Cables. Atomos AtomFLEX HDMI (Type-A) Male to HDMI (Type-A) Male Coiled Cable (16 to 32") $149 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1250778-REG/atomos_atom4k60c6_hdmi_type_a_male_to.html Atomos AtomFLEX HDMI (Type-A) Male to HDMI (Type-A) Male Coiled Cable (12 to 24") $89 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1250777-REG/atomos_atom4k60c5_hdmi_type_a_male_to.html jonpais was kind enough to share his experience, trial and error with cables and has had success with Rocketfish HDMI Cables. webrunner5
I would imagine Any HDMI cable that has a Name you recognize is a good one. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, on and on. Almost every one of those cheap ones on Amazon are the same HDMI cable with a different name you never heard of, or associate the name with cheap ass stuff. When I looked up Rocketfish on Amazon it looks to me they make kind of cheap overpriced stuff also. https://www.amazon.com/Rocketfish/b/ref=bl_dp_s_web_2530318011?ie=UTF8&node=2530318011&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=Rocketfish

interceptor121
If you look on the rocketfish $20 cable it says HDMI premium which is what I mentioned The list if certified vendors is here https://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/Premium_HDMI_Cable_Participant_List.aspx None of Sony or Apple or other major brands directly manufacturers cables so whatever you buy is almost guaranteed to be made in China I would say $20 is pretty high already for something that costs couple of dollars to make but if you have the right ergomics would be OK I personally would not spend more than that and the GH5 manual simply recommends a high speed cable so it is not going above the 18 GBPS Speed If you look at the atomos one which is coiled I doesnt even specify a bandwidth and atomos is not HDMI premium certified their cable despite the brand trust doesn’t provide the only piece of information that is actually mandatory on the GH5 manual. Is that not weird? And the other length is $29.99? In UK is £16.45 and review rating is average to low Atomos ATOMCAB010 HMDI Coiled Cable, Full HDMI to Full HDMI https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NUPYNUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wF-oBbEBYXC67

interceptor121
I would not buy a cable without specifications. A cable is not HDMI 1.4 or 2 is standard fast or ultra fast. Premium fast £20 is as far as I would go. Then if it breaks you can buy another 3 by the time you get to £
