IronFilm
https://www.searchenginejournal.com/youtube-on-desktop-now-plays-vertical-videos-without-black-bars/263649/ Quote We launched an update to the YouTube video player on desktop – the player now automatically adapts to provide the best viewing experience based on the video’s size (aspect ratio) and your computer’s screen/browser size. Highlighting the changes below and sharing more about the reasons behind the change: Historically, for non wide-screen videos (not 16:9) like vertical and square videos, we would show black bars alongside the video, making the video really small. This update moves away from the need for black bars. We launched this update on mobile awhile back (both Android and iOS) so this change also aligns the desktop and mobile viewing experiences. @OzNimbus has the solution: "Let's change the world for the better!" kaylee

kye
Now all the YouTubers who record IGTV and YT content will be hassling monitor companies for "flippy screens" as well as Sony!
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted August 3, 2018 Administrators Share Posted August 3, 2018 This is why smartphone cameras should use a square sensor. Then no matter which way you hold the damn thing, it can do landscape 16:9 video with same horizontal field of view. Phones are easier to hold in portrait so you can't blame the general public for using them that way round newfoundmass and ND64

BUT, if you consider that most TV / movies are people standing next to each other it makes total sense. Now with the rise of vertical video and lots of videos of a single person talking to camera it almost seems like these might be connected?!?!!? Inazuma
As someone who regularly shoots vertical photos, I don't mind this at all. Phil A
kye
Actually, this thread is mis-named. It should be called "YouTube has come to its senses and doesn't add black bars to non-16:9 content".

And yes, it will be nice to not see black bars on for instance old 4:3 footage kye
