Was he using oem batteries? I ran into a similar issue with my GH5 when using third party batteries. The camera went nuts... started auto firing the shutter a gazillion times with the screen frozen. Only pulling the battery helped. Repeated the exact same sequence of events both with oem and third party batteries with 100% repeatability. The oem batteries ran fine.
