Despite Sony having a near monopoly on sensor-tech power, they obviously don't yet know how to harness it. Panasonic and Fuji seem to know how to do it with their processing know-how and camera bodies. Panasonic can take a Sony sensor and give us 10-bit 422 in 4K and soon to be 6K. Meanwhile, inside Sony's test-centers, the A7sIII is just exploding over and over again while they try to get it to do 8-bit 422.

I don't understand why Sony had to use this 16 lane sensor for what? Video? Not...... photo? Maybe but it seem overkill

WOW ... I don't care about 8K but this A7R IV is boring for video ... A few months ago I said A7R IV and A7 IV will be released before A7S III. Hey Sony! It was supposed to be joke!

I guess to get this sensor sold to other firms, you have to make sure you're reference product doesn't have the best specs...

I think Quad Bayer makes sense for the A7S, no longer does it have to be crippled to 12 megapixels to satisfy low light performance... And it can do 8K as well.

So there you have it... Still time for Sony to do us proud with truly more exciting stuff than the dull A7R IV.

Having bought and sold quite a few different Sony’s in my life, I’m no longer tempted by their specs. Menus and ergonomics need radical improvement before I’d be tempted again.

None of the specs are really enticing for me.

61 mpx - don't need that much.

5.76 million dot EVF - same as Panasonic S1 for $2250 now.

1.44 million dot LCD vs 2.1 million dot LCD Panasonic

Menu and ergonomic still mostly the same. 

Sony do have better AF than Panasonic S1 but it isn't enough to justify the cost.

Cheaper than a MF camera, and there is now a Lot of lenses for it.

Those are sensors produced for off the shelf applications. Probably most are going into scientific and instrument products. None of those products would involve making video in the sense most people here know it.

In order to access those modes you need processors and related ICUs capable of handling the data. That is usually the bottleneck.

However they really suck with the A7S and A6500 replacement schedule. They have no excuse for no camera body with 4K60p. That sucks. 

4K60p will require a next generation processor. Until they get the thermal efficiency good enough, you will not see that mode.

The overheating comes from the processor, not the sensor. Having an APS-C sensor will not change that basic fact.

Despite many similarities with IMX455, this IMX551 is not off-the-shelf, it's Sony exclusive.
