Fstoppers moved to Puerto Rico. Have you had the desire to move?

Seems there are probably enough of us on here with the same idea who live in enough different countries to form our own internal AirBnB to pull it off with.

If we all agreed to a minimum standard of tripod and lights etc being left in each of our houses then we would all be able to travel light as well !

Puerto Rico has very lovely places, but the Puerto Rico you describe is very different than the Puerto Rico most Puerto Ricans live in. Things are still very bad after the hurricane, but it wasn't paradise before the hurricane either. Most of my friends there live very difficult lives right now on the island, which shouldn't be the case given they're American citizens living in an American territory.

i did move!

ive spent most of my life living in southern california, san diego and LA, surrounded by tons of people, traffic, all that. lived in NYC too.

i moved to the mountains to a small town of less than 3000 people, and i LOVE it. so good for my mental health!

ive done my time in the cities! so happy to be gone, the view out my window is WAY better

I did think about moving to country side after I spend 2 night at friend's friends house at Mercer, so much quieter than suburban area, much bigger space and surprisingly not too many insects or mosquitoes!   The air quality is much nicer too!  Just going to the nearest shop is like 20min drive and to the city is like 50min.

Looks wonderful, I always thought it was a bit unnatural to be surrounded by a million people you don't know everyday, though everyone likes different things. 

What do you do for a living out there?

True, I'm talking in the context of Fstoppers, when you already have a good business that you can manage remotely. In this case PR is a good choice but it's true that most locals struggles, the economy, public debt, and local government suck. On top of that, hurricane Maria was very bad.

i saved a bunch of money before i moved up here, so the answer is... not much ?

seriously tho, i was having a bad time, my stress level was out of control at my job, etc, and i had a little mini nervous breakdown about a year and a half ago. it resulted in some time off work, and i was like... im not making good progress on my art, i cant think, i feel like my head is underwater all the time, and im getting the f out of here.

so i moved up to the mountains with the goal of making my first actual short film, and doing a bunch of new art work (fine art stuff), and i actually DID that~! it was a very productive year.

so now im out of money lol, but im starting to reach out to galleries and stuff. i basically need a barbara gladstone who wants to produce my cremaster cycle ?

and ive been REALLY lazy in january, the monday of months. thats whats goin on rn ?

edit: the cost of living is sooo much less up here than what im used to, its like being in a foreign country where dolars are actually valuable ? that was part of the plan ?

Sorry to hear things weren't going well for you.  We all have times like that, and it's great that you actually did something about it, which is more than most do (or can manage to do) under those circumstances.

NZ is beautiful, I actually looked into a work visa so I could apply for jobs - but I could not qualify despite a college degree and lots of professional experience. As far as my brief research went, you need to work in a field that's heavily in-demand, and journalist/digital marketing/social media is not one of those fields.

Puerto Rico requires nothing for an American to move outside of the cost of getting there. 

That said I'd still like to spend a few years in NZ.

Pretend you are a Teacher. They are always in demand. My daughter did that for 2 years in Australia, and they paid her way, helped her move, and a lot more benefits on housing etc.

Multimedia Producer ( or specialist?) is in demand I think, that how my South African colleague at work got his visa from, but now he is turning into full time pilot for Air NZ, what a change in career!

Nice.  I think that pilot isn't something you'd normally go into unless you have an interest in aviation, so (assuming that he does) then that's really awesome to hear.  So many people are into aviation and don't really get to spend much time in the industry, let alone in the air.  I get motion sickness so an aviation career is definitely not on my radar, but I've been on a couple of aerial sight-seeing tours, one in a helicopter and one in a small plane, and I can really see the appeal, it feels like you're completely free.

Yeah, He owns a Yak-52 himself and have it shipped from SA to NZ. I think the pilot shortage make it a possible for him to jump onboard giving his age is not young any more.

I went to see the Nitro Funny Cars once.  When they let rip it was so much louder than anything else it was like it wasn't even sound anymore but had become something different.  It feels like the fabric of spacetime having the shit shaken out of it and the waves just go through you like you are a sheet of tissue paper on the surface of a lake and someone threw in a stone right next to you!

Yeah he has a health food channel he's been doing for a long time. Cost of living is quite cheap there I imagine though. He probably doesn't make that much. He previously lived with his mom.
