Canon announce the 5D Mark III – EOSHD takes a first look

I thought I would die before this camera was released.

Continued strong sales of the 5D Mark II put paid to a revolution for the line, or an earlier release date. So the 5D Mark III is a very evolutionary camera. If it isn’t broke – don’t fix it. People do tend to forget what a power house the 5D Mark II was for video, and especially stills and many current owners are well satisfied.

At the "Canon Announcement" (really just the rep doing a slideshow) at the store I work for, he said about 585 MB per Minute of video in ALL-I, which would equate to about 78Mbps bitrate...

I really like this evolutionary approach, that brings all the really important changes to the 5D system. My only problem at the moment is: How to get one as fast as possible?

Andrew: I know you live in Berlin, and, as I am german as well, thought you might have a tip for a german online store, that might be comparable to Adorama or B&H in the US. Amazon.de usually is very slow with pre-order options for new cameras. Thanks!

Very good article !

I believe too many people are about dramatic & revolutionary specs, that was the case with the Scarlet VS the C300...but now everybody is saying the c300 is a killer camera. :P

Tech-specs aside, one other important aspect is the robustness of the built. 
Sony Nex series or the GH2 are very good but tend to suffers hours of shooting or bad weather condition, which can be a trouble if you wanna use it as your work horse. Well at least for me it is important  ::)

Planet 5D video side by side comparison showed that the Mark III was indeed larger than the MarkII.

I didn't actually use any German online stores when there, since I couldn't read any of them!

Choose the biggest German online photographic specialist, not consumer electronics Amazon, as they will get largest stock allocation.

The video resolution improvements, death of moire and aliasing especially, this all sounds great. I suspect we'll get a "EOSHD Canon 5D MkIII Shooter's Guide" pretty soon :-)

Two things I'm looking forward to find out is how well it handles low-light, high-iso (over 1600) compared to the existing DSLRs (and the GH2) and very important, what the price will be here in Europe.

Andrew, how can you be so sure of this. Have you seen some raw uncompressed video from the MKIII that noone else has seen? Yes it looks good so far, and the specs are good on paper, but I will reserve judgement until I can download an example of the real deal.

Great article, however when you mention that DSLR are Oscar acceptable; I believe Cinema and Broadcast acceptable would have been a more reasonable point as the Oscar (or any other major awards) have a large degree of being incredibly biased. 

Thou the only issue to me saying that DSLRs are cinema/broadcast acceptable is that; majority of movies which publicly declared it was shot on SLR have been terrible as reviews alone would state. I.e see Red Tails, Act of Valour, Newlyweds. However those which never publicly mentioned SLRs were used are generally good to great. see Black Swan, 127 hours, Drive, I don't want to talk about Kevin etc

While I agree with you that nearly every 5DMK2 movie I have seen are not to our liking - Andrew was implying that they are more than enough of a "tool" to get a decent movie made.  All up to the artist behind the lens. 

Heck if I see another kid rent a Red Epic and shoot 120fps slow motion of his dog or a stream of pee ill shoot myself.  But it doesn't mean the camera blows - I am confident that Promethius will look amazing because of Ridley Scott's vision and the team of hundreds of people he works with.

Also almost all the movies you mentioned use the 5DMK2 for SMALL portions of the movie - not the entire production.

I agree on the point about the artist behind the lens. Realisticly every filmmaker should be aware of that. My point in the end was that a film shouldn't feature the camera/s that were used in its production as marketing material, no matter what percentage of it is seen in the final cut.
