Pretty neat news. 91Mbit/s sounds great to me, but I'm desperately hoping it's 422. Given how impressive the GH2 can look at around 80mbit/s with the 420 compression, the 5d3 with 91mbit/s and 422 could be killer.

I'm still hoping for actually gradable material, that was recorded by any video DSLR (or mirrorless photo camera).

Fingers crossed!

Damn that is good news! 91Mbps is awesome. Got to wonder about pricing though. This is supposed to be a photography tool first and foremost yet what real improvements are there for pure photographers, faster AF? Can't see a lot of reasons to upgrade from the MKII for non video users. Doesn't concern us video folks but wondering how the market as a whole will take to the camera and price.

The minimum bitrate specified by the main UK broadcasters is 100Mb/s for intra-frame codecs; 50Mb/s is the minimum for inter-frame codecs only. You probably weren't talking about the UK of course, but here are the specs:

At 91Mb/s intra-frame, the 5DMk3 seems to be pitched at just-sub-broadcast-quality, even if it turns out to have 4:2:2. Unfortunately, that puts it in the same category as existing DSLR's, consumer camcorders and camera phones (i.e. up to 25% of a programme could be shot on a Mk3 without stopping that programme from being accepted for broadcast, but this footage would be too compressed to qualify as true HD).

For short films, music videos and corporates, however, this is definitely a step up from existing DSLR's - and broadcasters don't always stick to their own rules!
