what i don't get is that for such high priced camera as panasonic s1 why don't they offer uncompressed raw on usb 3.0 that has enough bandwidth for 4k raw in 14 bits, is it only to protect their more expensive pro video camera linup ? adding a hardware usb 3.0 path for uncompressed data out of the sensor is obviously not as expensive as putting a 10 bit h265 chip in camera plus the extra costs of upgraded thermal design and bigger battery to handle h265 compression+in camera fast sd-card write.

Never owned an L mount before. Andrew, you're the king of adapting lenses---any helpful information? Will this camera also accept M mount?

EF Mount (I'm presuming EF mount for your Rokinon lenses?)  As you don't need any electronic control of those lenses then this dumb adapter will be all you need.

This lens is very impressive. I was thinking about purchasing the 50mm Canon 1.2 as I've had a few of them in the past and really miss it. It would have to be adapted to for my Sony A7III as would the Voigtlander but this rendering and bonus sharpness has got me thinking!

We really are spoilt for choice these days, so many great cameras at reasonable prices. Basically just pick one that suits your style and off you go. No excuses for not going out and creating good art.

Andrew, I think that your asessment of H.265’s adoption roadmap versus the arrival of new RAW codecs is very astute. I was having a conversation with one of my company’s Videographers about exactly that: the timing is too late. H.265 gave me a huge leg up in the NX1 for several years (especially after the hack), but now it’s too little too late. I predict it will be the “Pro” codec in everyone’s flagship models for maybe two more product cycles, then everyone will one by one start to one-up each other with RAW integration. 

What that RAW format ultimately proves to be remains to be seen. ProRes compression, while tried and tested, is a bit old hat, and while I don’t doubt that applying it to a Bayer pattern signal produces fantastic image quality (ProRes RAW), there probably are more efficient possibilities out there at this juncture. 

In the limited time I’ve had to play with BlackMagic RAW on the Pocket 4K, I’d say it is more closely representative of what may be possible.

Perhaps we will see H.265 compression applied to a bayer pattern signal. That would probably be a very flexible codec for the size indeed! 

The emphasis shift that I hope to see in the long run is away from codec flexibility and dynamic range, towards quality of color science. In two years if the dynamic range of most cameras is high enough to be a non-issue, and RAW in various forms also exists across the board, other issues like color shift over the range of exposure, and dual pixel autofocus will hopefully be pushed to the forefront. The Alexa remains unthroned for a reason, and it’s not just that it shoots RAW. Canon protects its Cinema cameras with that great AF. RED has had a monopoly on good compressed RAW with REDCODE, but not for much longer. The FS5 has that brilliant internal electronic variable ND! There is a lot of tech out there right now that single manufacturers provide. Hopefully it all spreads around soon just like RAW.

Andrew!....thanks for getting this material out there. Question - beta firmware had a noise reduction slider that was deactivated. It literally did nothing to the image when moved. Does your 1.0 firmware allow for noise reduction control that actually DOES remove noise reduction at -5?

Slow mo looks pretty good. There's some aliasing on finer details but usable? Maybe. YouTube crushed the hell out of it. A bump in bit rate for 180fps mode would be most welcome in future software update but what they really need to give us is full manual control in 180fps mode, at the minute it's Program auto only!

From Cinema5Ds review, the IBIS looks very impressive. Sony's IBIS was almost unusable and jittery and weird - the GH5 is truly on another level. So, hoping the S1 is closer to the GH5. But it seems like Panasonic knows what it is doing in this respect.

Oh wonderfull!

You guys see what Panny did with this HEVC audio? They didnt give us PCM audio. They gave us AAC compression......at 128kps!!! Ugggg.

Looking at the HEVC profile. Its not even high profile toolset. Its "main" (mid-level calculation) profile instead.

Nice Panny.....nice cripple. So now we need to wait until July to pay for the upgraded video specs.

According to the MediaInfo tool, those HEVC files are 'Main 10@L5.1@High' (Main 10 profile, Level 5.1, High Tier)

HEVC doesn't have a 'High' profile (only Main) - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Codinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding

Main 10 => up to 10 bits per colour component, 4:2:0

Level 5.1 => up to 4096 × 2160 @ 60p

High Tier  (combined with level 5.1) => up to 160 Mbit/s

The profile/level/tier info is provided for the benefit of decoders - it allows them to work out if they can decode the stream. It doesn't tell you what encoding features/techniques/limitations the encoder actually uses, just the range of features etc. it *could* use.

Don't forget, AAC audio is changing to high bitrate PCM with the July V-LOG firmware update.
