Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 17, 2013 Administrators Share Posted July 17, 2013 Only heat stops the Hero 3 Black Edition from doing double the stock frame rates. Pretty amazing technology in a matchbox... http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/121586-gopro-hero3-4k-capture-at-24fps-not-yet-possible-overheating-would-pose-a-problem
Kasper Mols
Would be cool to reuse the sensor in a bigger body then :P Zach
peederj
Would be cool to reuse the sensor in a bigger body then :P It exists (albeit in prototype form) and is called the "Novo." It will be rental-only if and when it ships.
Kasper Mols
I read about that... Wasn't that just about adapting other lenses, not about overcranking the fps and such?
Julian
UPDATE: GoPro has provided an update to clarify the company's position on the above copy: "Currently, the sensor is capable of higher frame rates at 4K and 720p ... but the processor is already being pushed to its absolute limits. Our current implementation [in the Hero3] is using both the sensor and processor to their maximum, and our current cooling technology allows us to do just that." This is the case with many sensors. The sensor in most camera's - point and shoot, phone, etc. have higher specs than the final product, because the imaging processor is not fast enough (or the storage, or something else in the pipeline). Take the Sony IMX144CQJ for example. The sensor is capable of 4K at 60 fps: http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/cx_news/vol69/pdf/imx144cqj.pdf This is a 1/1.7" bsi sensor used in high end compactcamera's by many brands - none of them do 4K.
