Zach Ashcraft
Hello EOSHD folks. Pretty simply question for you all. I am a 5d3 and t2i owner looking to get into the micro 4/3 platform. The more I use my 5D the more I dislike lugging it around. Paired with a 24-70 or 70-200, my wrists begin to hurt after a long day of shooting. I'm currently looking into the GH3 (price just dropped to 998 on amazon) or the olympus om-d. Has anyone used both? It would be great to have the excellent video performance of the GH3, but I'm wondering if the photos match that of the OM-d. Can anyone compare the autofocus (in stills mode) on the GH3 to the canon cameras? This is primarily for stills as I photograph weddings and engagements often, but having great video is obviously a huge plus.
ntblowz
There is upcoming Olympus E-M1 which have PDAF and no low pass filter, should take care of the tracking issue For wedding shoot this guy done a lot of weddings by just using the E-M5 http://shutterleaf.co.uk/blog/olympus-omd-em5-for-wedding-photography-experience-with-3-micro-four-third-camera-bodies-a-review This guy uses E-M5 for wedding video https://vimeo.com/69368786 For comparison with GH3, if using RAW the difference is not too much, but on jpeg it is less sharp and more pale than Olympus. AF wise I found GH3 to be slightly more accurate and faster especially in low light (it got -3EV-18 AF range, same as 6D, better than 70D's -0.5EV) Video wise GH3 is a lot better, currently with Olympus the video quality breaks up if there is fast action or complex scene which result in blockings that ruin the video
ronjbase
I've been using the GH3 for video & stills since March, no issues. Did play with the Lumix GX7 the other day. It does better at high ISO's than the GH3. Will definetly be added a GX7 to my arsenal. LInk to a slide done with the GH3 yesterday. http://www.dallasnews.com/entertainment/restaurants/photos/20130824-check-out-the-mouthwatering-doughnuts-at-glazed-donut Zach Ashcraft

Double thanks actually...I live about 15 minutes from there! Going to have to swing over to dallas and check that place out :) Mind if I ask what lens you used? Definitely looks good enough for my tastes
ronjbase
Either the 12-35mm or the 25mm F1.4 lens & the Olympus 12mm. Working on getting a full set of primes since I'm doing a lot of both stills and video at the same time. Dream still kit would be to add the new 17mm Olympus along with their 45mm and 75mm plus the new GX7. Played with the GX7 last week, this is a serious still machine. Images look good up to 6400 ISO, useable at 12,800.
hoodlum
Looks like the E-M1 will have a Mic input. I wonder if Olympus made improvements to video. Olympus will also be announcing a 12-40mm f2.8 and 40-150mm f2.8 at the same time as the E-M1 in 2 weeks. And based in an initial user report it looks like all of the lenses from Olympus's 43 line, when used with the E-M1, will focus as fast or faster than on their existing DSLR. http://***URL removed***/forums/post/52065277
ronjbase
The local Olympus told me that the powers that be at Olympus was aware of the lack of video features on the E-M5 and was saving the features we need for the professional model. Let's hope.....
