Aquilasfx
Hello my new MacBook Pro, have only 500gb of ssd inside. I would like to buy a new working external portable solution ssd to use for projects where I,m working, then I usually backup in an external Drobo and on cloud as well. I found this solution: - Sandisk ssd extreme portable 1TB USB3 (max 500mb/s) around 180eur -and this extreme samsung x5... but it costs too much Do you think that working with videos (resolve) with sandisk is a good solution, or would lag with 500mb/s? Super Members Mattias Burling Posted June 27, 2019 Super Members Share Posted June 27, 2019 Ive been editing from a Sandisk 1TB USB3 disk for a couple of years on a MBP. Works perfectly, raw, prores, you name it.
Trek of Joy
I have the Samsung T5, its actually a couple dollars cheaper here in the US than the Sandisk with the same capacity, its also been perfect with large prores and raw files. I don't think you can go wrong with either option. Chris
homestar_kevin
I've been using two Samsung T5 Drives, one 500g one 1TB, for the past year and they've been great! They're insanely tiny.
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted June 27, 2019 Administrators Share Posted June 27, 2019 Samsung T5 works brilliantly. Very robust. Very fast. Also the older Samsung T3 is a good drive too and maybe cheaper used?
tweak
I've had a lot of Samsung T5s, work pretty well. However I'm currently using Samsung EVO 860s in a Startech.com case, I feel these give slightly better performance and speed/longevity/durability than the T5s. webrunner5
The main difference from the T3 is speed and a better case.. "The big differentiating factor with the T5 revolves around the addition of USB 3.1 Gen 2 support. The previous T3 SSDs supported USB 3.1 Gen 1, which is basically just glorified USB 3.0. With USB 3.1 Gen 2 in tow, Samsung is able to achieve higher speeds — up to 540MB/s compared to the T3’s 450MB/s max. Multiple Blackmagic Disk Speed Tests resulted in read speeds that often came close to the maximum theoretical speed.". Kubrickian
If your MacBook supports thunderbolt 3, take a look at those instead of USB 3.1 drives. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1456989-REG/glyph_technologies_a1000pro_glyph_atom_pro_1tb.html
webrunner5
Hard to believe those kind of speeds. Their "normal" Thunderbolt 3 drives are well, sort of normal. Interesting how they can pick up the pace from those to this as they say. https://hddmag.com/glyph-atom-ssd-review/
Kubrickian
There's other T3 drives with those speeds. I think it's a way faster bus than USB 3.1 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1431353-REG/samsung_mu_pb1t0b_am_1tb_x5_portable_ssd.html webrunner5
Video Hummus
I have a few T5s well. They have never let me down ?
Aquilasfx
400$ for 1tb..... too much. That write/read speed is really needed to work on the fly with external disk? Can’t be sufficient t3 or Sandisk Extreme portable as you told before?

homestar_kevin
The Samsung t5 1tb drive is under $200 in the US, not sure where you're located, but that's definitely one of the cheapest plug and play solutions out there. Definitely fast enough to keep up with what I've been doing with them

The Sandisk SSD Extreme will work fine and its speeds are very close to the T5. If it is a lot more affordable than the T5 in your part of the world, I'd say GO FOT IT!
