popalock
I’m considering getting a GH2 for video (I’m a newbie to HD but it seems IQ-wise, the Panasonic is the best of the low budget bunch). Now the thing holding me back is image stabilization (IS). If I were to get a canon 600d for example, I could use the 28-105 L lens which is fixed aperture capable AND has IS. Now, I can use this lens with a GH2 but from what I understand I’ll lose the IS capability GH2 with the hack seems to be head & shoulders better than the Canon for IQ but lens options aren’t as good. Any suggestions? Can only think of getting a steady cam, but they’re a bit of a pain if you were to zoom while filming Thanks!
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted March 16, 2012 Administrators Share Posted March 16, 2012 Equivalent to the 28-105 L on the GH2 is 14-140mm. That has IS. And unlike the Canon lens it is silent IS and not picked up on the sound track. Problem solved! I suggest however using a faster prime (F2 or F1.4) with a handheld rig, rather than use IS for video. An IS zoom is usually pretty slow, expensive and floaty.
popalock
thanks Andrew - very solid advice. Can you give an example or two of what a handheld rig could be? just want to make sure the whole thing is within budget and physically practical for me. thanks! oh and one other thing – is there any solution to the aperture changing on the Panasonic OIS lenses? Ie the image getting darker as I zoom in as the lens is not a constant aperture? Of is this not something I need to worry about? Have to say it sounds like opting for stabilised rig & using my newish canon & old pentax primes might be the best/cheaper option if I was to go with the GH2
