Stab
I want to sell my current M43 lenses and 'swap' them for the new Samyang primes. They seem great! I already got the 35mm 1.4 and now I'm looking for the 85mm and the new 16mm f2.0. With these lenses and the speedbooster I would have the following focal lengths: 11mm 1.4 (w speedbooster) 16mm 2.0 24mm 1.0 (w speedbooster) 35mm 1.4 55mm 1.0 (w speedbooster) 85mm 1.4 This seems almost too good to be true. Are there any downsides to this? If I put a speedbooster before the 35mm, is that just as good as buying the 24mm 1.4? Second question. Do normal adapters cause any drop in image quality? The 16mm f2.0 also comes in a MFT mount which can be mounted directly on my GH3. However, I'm planning to get the Nikon version so it can be mounted on the Speedbooster. But will the normal adapter induce quality loss? Or is the Nikon version with an adapter optically the same as the M43 version? Hope to hear your thoughts! BTW, I shoot only video and use a GH3. Julian
This seems almost too good to be true. Welcome to the SpeedBooster :) If you have a 35mm 1.4 and a speedbooster, buying a 24mm 1.4 is pointless indeed (unless you want to use it on the speed booster, as 17mm f/1.0. Normal adapters don't give any quality loss. They just extend the mount. Optically the Samyang lenses are all the same. The ones with MFT mount just are longer with a different mount, so you don't need the adapter. Buying the Nikon versions with a Speedbooster is a good idea. Results with the SB can vary from lens to lens, so you might want to check out other peoples results with the Samyang lenses on the SB, although I don't see any reason for trouble. Just have a look on Vimeo and you'll find good results. The only doubt is the Samyang 16mm f/2.0 - it's made for aps-c-sensors with a crop factor of 1.5x With the SpeedBooster your GH3 will have a crop factor of 2x 0,71 = 1,42x, so you'll be pushing the 16mm a bit 'over the edge'. Most lenses have an image circle that is bigger than what they are designed for, I think it will work without problems, especially since you're in a 16:9 crop for video. But best thing would be to try before you buy. nahua
Stab
Thanks for your reply Julian. I think I'm going ahead with it. It's amazing to buy 3 primes and a Speedbooster and get 6 primes in return :) Thanks for the info on the speedbooster in combination with the 16mm. Might be pushing it indeed. At least I can always use it with a regular adapter and who might have slight vignetting with the speedbooster. Let's see. 1 more question. I have a variable ND filter of 67mm. The 16mm has a filter size of 77mm. If I use a step-up ring and mount the 67mm filter on the 77mm lens, is that a garuanteed vignetting? And will that be a slight vignetting, or will it be really large? Otherwise I have to buy a new ND filter as well... I already tested it on the 35mm and there is no vignetting. But considering that the 16mm is pretty wide...
dishe
By the way, you can sometimes find cheaper deals on Samyangs with their third party lenses- Vivitar, Rokinon, Bower, Falcon, etc. The 85mm is on a pretty good sale over at Buy.com (rakuten): http://www.rakuten.com/prod/vivitar-lens-85mm-f1-8-lens-for-canon-v-85mm-c/251889489.html $169! Julian
1 more question. I have a variable ND filter of 67mm. The 16mm has a filter size of 77mm. Otherwise I have to buy a new ND filter as well... I already tested it on the 35mm and there is no vignetting. But considering that the 16mm is pretty wide... With the SpeedBooster and the 16mm you will probably get (heavy) vignetting. Because you are really using the whole lens for your image. With the other lenses, that are made for full frame, you're not using the whole lens because you have a smaller sensor (even with speed booster) so that's probably no problem, like you noticed with the 35mm. Btw, when the SpeedBooster was launched this was exactly the kit I was thinking about. I switched to Canon raw since then, so I've never bought the SpeedBooster or used it. Still feel a bit sad about that, it's an amazing invention. By the way... almost forgot, but you also could consider the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. Since you already have a Samyang 35mm, it's probably not as relevant.. but you could do without the 16mm and 35mm and go for the zoom... the quality of the Sigma is really extraordinary. On the same 'to good to be true' level as the SpeedBooster.
ntblowz
Tolkina 11-16mm F2.8 and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is also another good option beside 16mm F2.0 and 35mm F1.
dishe
Whoops, the Vivitar lens I linked to above isn't made by Samyang anymore. Never mind!
Stab
I ordered the 16mm f2.0 (Nikon mount). Will get here in 1-2 days. Exciting. I heard (from rumors) that next month the 'Lens Turbo' Nikon F -> MFT will be released. This is a Chinese knock-off of the Speedbooster. Will probably be at least 50% cheaper. I'm only looking at the 85mm now. I can get a Cine version for a pretty good price. Is the focus ring of the Cine version also 'comfortable' enough for shooting without a follow focus? It doesn't look like it from the pictures. Anyone has experience with it?
Julian
I think the Speed Booster is worth the money over the Lens Turbo: http://www.mirrorlessworld.com/?p=6265
Stab
I think the Speed Booster is worth the money over the Lens Turbo: http://www.mirrorlessworld.com/?p=6265 The makers claim that they are aware of the 'problems' with the 1st generation Lens Turbo and that these are solved / improved in the new MFT version. The speedbooster MFT version is also much better than the 1st generation. Let's see, I will wait for some reviews when it comes out. The speedbooster is €500,00 in my country and I simpyl think that's too expensive at the moment. Not for what it does, but for what it is. Julian
I wouldn't be cheap on it, since you're going to put all your optics in front of it... But yes, if you can wait for the reviews, why not.
