Canon 3x crop mode

Some folks claim the 3x crop mode is far noisier than 1x mode.

Thinking about this, the vertical height in 1x crop mode is obtained from skipping every 2 lines , thus reducing full sensor height to 1/3rd, whereas the 3x crop mode is essentially a contiguous swatch of the central portion of the sensor but also by 1/3rd full height.

So essentially both schemes are using a third of the picture height....

So why should the 3x crop mode be more noisy - is there something I am missing?

Never heard of this.  I use the 3x crop mode on the t3i along with high bitrate courtesy of 1% and Tragic Lantern.  Best video you can get for $350.  Moire/aliasing under control and a picture that you can actually grade a little and sharpen without it falling to pieces.

I use the older 1% bitrate hack with more control.

What I have found is giving the sensor plenty of light keeps noise under control.  I shoot fast glass (ie f/1.4) and high ISO 1250 if necessary.  Going past 1250 to me just introduces too much noise and underexposing is just shooting yourself in the foot noise wise.

3x crop mode magnifies the noise whereas with the full sensor mode, a lot of the noise is thrown away with the binning process.

Look at GH2 crop mode as further example, or look at a still photo at 100% (1:1) then scale it down to 800x600 to see what I mean about the noise.

Interesting.  I'll trust you on that.  The problem for me using the whole sensor is the moire/aliasing and false color artifacts screw up the picture so much whatever noise nuances are allegedly present in 3x mode are irrelevant.  I use full APS-C  frame for the f/1.4 shots with shallow depth of field but for the f/8 stuff you will get moire/aliasing/false color/etc depending on the subject matter.  3x mode removes a lof of that and if you give the scene enough light you can clean up what's left with Neat Video.
