IronFilm
For those still in the DSLR world, resisting the lure of mirrorless, then the Nikon D780 represents better price/performance value than the Canon 1D mk3 does! (which for most of us is just so expensive we can almost totally ignore its existence when it comes to discussing "DSLRs", just like I kinda pretended the Canon 1D C didn't exist back during its era! ha) If you're a hybrid Nikon shooter, then you've now got in Nikon F mount a killer setup with a Nikon D780 / Atomos Ninja V https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d780/nikon-d780A.HTM Quote For high-end shooting and additional video workflow support, the D780 can capture 10-bit video with N-Log or HDR (HLG, Hybrid Log-Gamma) video support out via the HDMI connection. Other video features include focus peaking, highlight display (stripes), time code support, and in-camera slow-motion and timelapse movie creation. This is very very curious.... is this the first ever DSLR with timecode I/O??? I hope so! But I won't be holding my breath. What excites me the MOST about the Nikon D780 announcement is that I'm looking forward to the price crash on eBay of all the D750 bodies ? Been wanting one of those for a long time. j_one
I'm also excited for the D750 price drops. It's hard to believe it came out in 2014, it's still a very capable stills camera. I actually missed the timecode out bit. That actually is very interesting..

And how is the D780 better then the Z6?

Arguably "the best"???) was so far head of its time as a photography workhorse beast in that price bracket! Just a pity that price bracket as too far above what I could justify as a primarily stills camera for what for me is just the hobby side of things. Buth with every passing year it creeps closer to being a "spontaneous what the hell why not purchase". Only problem is all the competitors keep on coming down in price too! Might just decide buying a D7200 is "good enough", or the big extra for a greatly depreciated Nikon Z6 is worth it over a D750 for all the video features (or ditto a X-T3 if a kick ass Nikon F adopter with AF comes out, or I happen to get a few X Mount lenses). 47 minutes ago, Super8 said: WHAT'S THE VIDEO HDR FEATURES HE TALKS ABOUT IN THE VIDEO? Not holding my breath though, as we're having photographers talking about video so far. (or in other words, they're clueless and don't know what they're even saying!) Got to wait until a video specialist such as Jordan from DPReview gets their hands on it. My wild guess is the D780 will be as good as the Z6 in video, or perhaps a little better or a little worse. (such as lacking raw output??) 4 hours ago, j_one said: I actually missed the timecode out bit. That actually is very interesting.. Same as I just said above, not holding my breath about TC but being mildly hopefully. Again, for photographers writing about something they know nothing about. Django
IMO the D780 is DOA. It's a Z6 in DSLR form factor (but with no IBIS, Z-mount or ProResRAW). Still no internal N-log or 10-bit so you gotta carry an Atomos on top of it for any type of serious video work. At $2,300 this makes no sense whatsoever when you can already buy a Z6 new for $1800 or less. Nikkor, Dunjoye and Geoff CB
homestar_kevin
I can't seem to find this answer anywhere, does this have a focus motor for AF and AF-D lenses, or did they take that out?

Yes, the focus motor is to the left of the bottom screw on the bayonet ring. homestar_kevin
homestar_kevin
Ah nice! Had seen some rumors the past few days that it might be removed. I can definitely see the appeal of this for anyone that has older nikon lenses or has a current d750. I'm not interested in it at the launch price, but give it a few months. Been wanting one of those for a long time. I wonder if that really comes? The D750 has a new price of 949€ currently with the discounts available (used ~750€) and the D780 comes with a MSRP of 2499€. I don't think there's a big margin for the used prices to go that much down, especially seeing how expensive the new model is in comparison. IronFilm
Yes, obviously the D750 won't fall as far in price as if the new D780 had came out at say US$1.5K instead. But still, every time a new model comes out, it applies pressure on the older models to come down in price on the secondhand market. As the D750 is no longer "the latest". Administrators Andrew Reid Posted January 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted January 9, 2020 I liked the D750 in 2014. A7S had more features for video but D750 had better quality 1080/60p in full frame mode, better stills and nicer colour. D780 does have a few advantages over Z6. Body won't feel like a consumer toy at least. 2 card slots. Maybe better AF with Nikon F lenses in video mode compared to the hit and miss FTZ adapter. In fact Z6 was hit and miss in stills for AF as well, not quite pro. Nikon should get 10bit N-LOG internal sorted though and stop dicking around with HDMI. At least do it over USB C. Come on Atomos, drop HDMI, it's 2020. Geoff CB
Super8
Didn't the Z6 get multiple AF updates for video and stills? Which cameras have pro AF? Is the A9 considered pro AF? or the EOS-R considered pro AF? Will you be trying Pro Res RAW with the Z6 ? It's hard to tell if that's a viable option for 2020. Geoff CB
I really just want to know if the rear screen and external monitor have the same annoying delay that the Z6 has. It honestly drives me crazy.

Mark Romero 2
While I really liked my D750, I think they should have just spent the effort making an F Mount to Z Mount adapter with a built in AF screw drive motor so that people could adapter their older Nikon AF-D lenses on the Z6 / Z7 . Otherwise, they should have just made the D780 as a mirrorless F Mount body so that the user would get access to all the AF points while using the viewfinder., and still use all their old lenses natively. As it is with the D780, one only gets the more narrow spread of AF points when using the viewfinder. And since the sensor in the D780 has all those PDAF points on it already for live view (LCD shooting), seems like a wasted opportunity.
