Administrators Andrew Reid Posted January 8, 2020 Administrators Share Posted January 8, 2020 Seems a similar tech to the FS5 e-ND. The question is... Why isn't it more widespread by now.
JurijTurnsek
https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/06/02/panavision-lcnd-first-look/ Quote The main reason that the LCND needs to be used in a matte box is that both Sony and RED own several patents in relation to putting variable electronic ND in a camera. Also this: And the fact that ignoring the 180° rule is essential for good EIS, which is a HUGE selling point for smartphones right now (and with good reason, shaky footage sucks). heart0less

I can't remember whether I did the build along in the end but it is a piece of piss to make but the trick is finding a supplier for a piece big enough for front mounting. As well as being easy, its very cheap. Andrew Reid

That would be really handy if one could get a filter that would fit in the small Tilta Matte box.

There is scope to do some interesting stuff with it linking the aperture to it as well so you can automatically maintain the same exposure. It can then link into the ISO as well for when you run out of road in terms of the amount of ND that can be applied. The whole "PBC as a central hub" thing is designed for these sort of expansions to be incorporated so its already in there from a control point of view but is back burnered until I can find a supplier for a suitably sized piece of glass. kye, matthere and Anaconda_ 2
sanveer
I wonder if the electronic ND filter affects image quality on smaller (/tiny) sensors?
noone
Very good question. Not just in phones. A built in ND filter is not something I ever really wanted but since inheriting my Dads old Canon G10 point and shoot camera, having a built in filter that can be turned on and off at the touch of a button is something I now think ALL cameras should have. Noooooooo............. those damn patents hold back progress so much! Imagine if all companies could make eNDs, imagine how much they could innovate and improve the quality and features of eNDs? By themselves, RED and Sony are not going to push and innovate that hard to stay ahead when they're the only ones with it. sanveer and noone
