These FPGA chip are not only expensive but do also consume a lot of battery power.
Maybe they think for consumers the ProRes is too confusing?
Anyway, bigger question is, why was there never ProRes in their Cxxx line?

C700 had internal ProRes.

EOSHD Pro Color 5 for Sony cameras EOSHD Z LOG for Nikon CamerasEOSHD C-LOG and Film Profiles for All Canon DSLRs

You know what makes me happy?

Not all these specs, 8K and what-not..

Finally we have some arousement in our video field and all the companies will try to squeeze out as much as they can in the lowest possible price, so that they stay competitive.

Great times to hunt for second-hand bargains!

Sony definitely will first. They were close anyways with the full featured A7 III. You have to give them credit for going all out (including price).

Once they implement the internal pro codec, they’re back.

close? the A73 has the worst codec out of all current-gen FF cameras!

To implement ProRes, Canon would need to develop a new ASIC from scratch, which is expensive, and is only done every couple of camera generations, with one ASIC for all current Canon SLR and mirrorless cameras.

Z cam uses ASIC and implemented h264, h265, prores, and raw all on the same camera. Canon has way more resources and I assume could also develop a prores asic.

Z Cam has mentioned on their FB group that the E2 uses ASIC, but they managed to add ProRes after the fact.  Likely they had planned it from the start though so maybe that’s a different case.

They had planned it from the start. In fact, some users found out how to unlock it right away, way before it was licensed.

The advantage of an FPGA is that you can reconfigure it on the fly. Just load the software into it what you need at the moment. An asic with everything hardcoded in may be larger and more expensive.

You are describing the next FF 6k pocket!

5" screen, internal prores, internal raw.

Maybe too incremental. 8K is definitely next for Blackmagic.  Unlikely they'll be able to keep up with the competition in terms of autofocus and IBIS, but they should be able to put in an articulating screen and redesign the awkward body. It seems all roads are leading to a boxier body that is more rig-friendly.

They should still have their competitive advantage in recording formats, resolve, and price. 8K BRAW/Prores for under 4K, optimized to cut and color in Resolve.

I hope this puts a fire under the butts of Panasonic to really come out swinging (maybe for the last time) with a MFT camera that does the GH line proud. It has to compete with BM cameras as far as codec and Image quality.

They could do it by adding practical features that every person would use: internal NDs, improved IBIS, better AF, better screen and EVF, 6K options, and perhaps ProRes.

If it needs a bigger body that’s fine. Most of the savings with MFT is in lenses (especially as you scale to telephoto). They already have small MFT GX10 coming...

In terms of comprehensive features, as I had stated. Can you think of another camera at the time that had a more complete set of features?

Z6, EOS R, XT3, BMPC4K were all released in 2018. depending on what your needs were they were arguably better choices.

Sony didn't innovate much either with A73.. same resolutions, same codecs etc.. they mainly brought the price down which made it a huge success. We're still waiting in 2020 for a sign from Sony of the unicorn A7S3, but no dice. I think they waited too long and are in a rut now as they won't risk cannibalising FS/FX line.

True about configurability, and an off the shelf part is cheaper than a custom design. Not so sure about ASICs being larger though. The big benefits of ASIC are efficiency--less power consumption (especially important on battery powered cameras) and less heat generation. If your original design includes all the features your hardware is capable of, then ASIC makes a lot of sense if the designer has the sense to thoroughly test before release. These days software tends to be in continuous update mode, which is code for never ending beta.

Of course, everybody has different priorities. But I specifically stated the A7 III was remarkable at the time for how complete the feature set was - including price.

The A7 III was successful for one innovation only: comprehensive features. Every camera will have its fans who prioritize or fetishize a feature. But the most successful will have the complete shooting package, because that's what the general market is looking for: utility.

The R5, 8K marketing gimmick aside, will live or die on the same.
