Let's get back to cameras

The world is in a really dark place at the moment, but I think we need some hope.

Let's assume by July or August, we'll be through the worst of it and have a Canon EOS R5 to play with.

Maybe Fuji will surprise us with an X-H2 by then and Sony with an A7S III.

And hopefully some sport will be back on as well. I was going to film some of it!

So I think we should have one thread for the virus crisis, where we share tips about staying safe, hygienic, etc. and are free to discuss our fears too. Many will lose their income streams and they will need a place to talk and get help.

But I think my role now is to boost the camera side of the forum, get some camera related blogs out and stop my own coronavirus worries taking over from that. It's very hard to turn off the news when you have loved-ones in high risk groups and places. I will now try to do that and get back down to business.

Good luck to all who are trying to stay positive and trying to work without so much negative distraction in the world.

I salute you. 👍

This is the first Canon camera I've looked forward to in a good few years.

Ditto their cinema camera.

And the RED Komodo.

My favourite film growing up was Gregory's Girl and the last line (if you'll forgive the shortening of your name!) seems particularly apt here

"Andy, I think everything's gonna be all right."

I'm still waiting for the (fairly realistic) camera I've wanted for the past 2 years:

4K 10bit 422 Intra (ie prores or similar)
S35
120fps (in 4K)
2x XLR and proper manual controls
Internal ND's
V-lock battery mount (integrated, not some aftermarket contraption requiring rails and cables going everywhere)

URSA Mini Pro G2 is still the only one that meets this criteria, but with my income totally wiped out for the next 6 months at least, it is totally off the table now.

ZCam is the next closest offering, but seems to be missing proper audio.

I do not really care about new cameras now (ok I do but unlikely to get any) but i AM looking forward to photographing and recording the giant party that is gunna be here when "it's" over with what I have..

I don't imagine there's ever going to be an "it's over!" moment.

Some of the stuff I've read suggests that we'll be living with this virus for years, in much the same was as we live with the flu.

But of course, this is still early days so all of this research could turn out to be wrong. Maybe covid-19 will sign an armistice and the whole world will celebrate together for a brief moment before socialist ideology divides governments and an international standoff spanning 40 years and known as "The Cold & Flu War" will begin. Those in democratic capitalist countries will have access to a whole lot of new camera tech, while those in socialist dictatorships will only have access to a single, state-sanctioned camera.

I hope that camera has the things I listed above!

Well I was looking forward to shooting a combo of:

XT3 on sticks pure video

XT4 photo & video handheld

X100v pure photo

for my hybrid wedding coverage, but cancelled the order for the latter two, A. because I have no income now and B. no gigs to shoot and no idea what the future holds.

Assuming the industry gets back on some kind of track, but without as much money taken or to spend, I’m back to my previous conundrum of XT3 vs XH1.

Specifically build, handling, shutter, IBIS vs 4K 60p video plus it’s a win for the XH1 on price.

Still nothing else out there that really tempts me...

Camera is going to be more expensive for sure, the yen is so high vs other currency 😰  (while nzd tanked a lot)

Foolishly made one purchase after our dollar tanked...   as even then, the price was too good! Got myself a Lectrosonics LMb. Is the C1 band, which has just been made illegal in the USA a few weeks, a perfect storm of sell off for wireless gear due to frequency reblocking and the looming coronavirus recession.

Ooops..... that was audio, and not talking about cameras!

How do you manage hybrid photo/video weddings? Do you do it alone?

haha, hey now, I've often posted about cameras!

Although, you might need to dig back quite a few years before you find them to be exclusively on topic about cameras.

If the government allows me to go outside, then I'll likely pop across to the local park (which I expect will be completely EMPTY as it is mostly just surrounded by what will now be empty office buildings) and use all my ample free time now to play around with my Sony PMW-F3 and new Sony CineAlta 50mm T2 lens which I haven't had a proper chance to do yet. (thus I'm looking forward to what @Geoff CB is putting out as well with his F3!)

you know i was only thinking a few minutes ago of how to take advantage of the situation. I wonder if there is any merit in shooting some video of empty streets or highways, parks as it would make removing people or cars from said footage much easier and a  safer workplace at the moment in some instances i think. Of course you'd still need to obey the laws. but it would bring whole new level to guerilla film making perhaps. Maybe in the future the stock footage would be worth something in a post corona virus environment  We can always throw @BTM_Pix out in front to lure potential trouble away 😉 he seems like a magnet for interesting people.

I have just re-purposed my original Lidar prototype into a body worn device with a speaker that barks out "BACK OFF YOU BASTARD" when it detects someone breaking the recommended two metre safety perimeter.

Being confined to a small apartment, the novelty off this invention has worn very thin with my other half.
