I am really impressed with the way the Canon DSLR hack – Magic Lantern – has recently been progressing. Enabling video on cameras that didn’t have a video mode is a miracle in itself! (50D). Putting all the settings into a menu system on the camera rather than in a Windows app like PTools with the GH2 hack – also pretty good. As well as higher bitrate recording, ML has evolved to give us ISO 12,800 recording, peaking, crop marks, false colour, zebras and now even variable frame rates.

i still dont have a gh2, or a canon 60d. :-\
its just this wat holds me back.

Hi Andrew,

Nice write up about the new ML. It is incredible what Alex & Co are achieving now for sure.

I'm looking forward to your forthcoming shootout but might I suggest you also include the 'Cinema Picture Style' from cineplus.ch on the Canons as a comparison with the GH2's baked-in preset styles because it does not need a LUT and is by far the best looking PS with the least noise for the Canons IMHO. I'm not connected to the maker/author or anything but I highly recommend trying it.

Great work they have done! I just wish someone can hack a Nikon. Would love to see what a D5100 would do. vitality :P found the key too there code and see were they will go with it.

If there is a Nikon due for a good hacking it is the J1. That could actually be pretty good with high bitrate 24p on it and peaking.

Honestly I don't think the nikon j1/v1 have the res on par with the GH2, it's closer than the Sonys but not on par
