With the other one making it perhaps they have changed their policy. Would be great as their video talk forum is so dead I feel sorry for people in there. And vice versa people on here can get unique information there e.g. new Fuji XT4 people. Although this Fuji forum is much nicer: https://www.fujix-forum.com/forums/ (not checked if they have a video section but it is good for lens advice). Generally I find smaller more specialised forums like EOSHD are friendlier places. So sharing more links makes sense to me. Especially now Facebook is taking over forum traffic. Surprisingly it is! If they keep this up I'll unban DPR links here. I'm a long standing member and actually it's a very friendly place and no silly tiffs that ever get out of hand. Disagreements at times yes, but it's very well moderated. It is not an especially 'technical' place other than for Fuji and yes it does have a dedicated video section but that is basically even more dead than the dodo. In short, it's more a fun, Fuji user hang out than anything. Which is fine. The complete opposite of Fuji Rumors however where the comments section is utterly toxic combined with a lot of general muppetry. Anyone with anything useful to say is shouted down by the trolls in their mothers basement, very quickly. DP Review is bad enough at times and I try and stay away from all the negative places as what's the point? Chxfgb
Chxfgb
Yeah, visiting DPreview is usually a bad habbit. It's best for camera issues and news imo. The other Fuji forum is very nice like you said. A place where sharing photos is appreciated. Here in Vietnam Discuss comments seem to be blocked which is great, as the rumours site is full of nasty trolls (bit like YouTube). I still see the rumours, just no comments. It's a bad habit sometimes to read them. We have a popular insomnia video on YouTube and the number of people commenting instead of using it to fall asleep is ridiculous. I have had to resort to pinning a comment begging them to ignore the comments section. People are weird and love to get sucked in to bickering online. Nobody ever wins. That's why the smaller communities like here and the Fuji X forum are great; people build up reputation and genuinely support each other instead of regurgitating headlines and arguing because they have buyer's bias. What hapened to John Pias (maybe spelled wrong)? I recall he was a moderator or something here and used to follow his content. Was wondering what he is up to now I am also in Vietnam. An example of a good small forum member who shared helpful gear experiences, but I think maybe he got a few nasty comments and wonder if that's why I don't see him here (not looked very hard though). Someone just posted a really good comparison of Fuji lenses on DPreview today, but nobody seems to appreciate it. Instead they are more concerned with bickering about what the next lens should be and what the next camera should do and trying to justify why the 35mm f1.4 is "magical". 🙄😁
MrSMW
@Chxfgb I think the 'secret to life' these days is not to read the comments section. Anywhere. Ever. I sometimes look at places such as DP Review for kit reviews and news etc, but avoid the comments section like it starts with a C and has a 19 in it. kye and Chxfgb 1
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 14, 2020 Author Administrators Share Posted July 14, 2020 DPReview used to be a great British camera info site. Really was great before the move to the US and Amazon. It started going downhill when they started to pad out the front page news feed with clickbait and sponsored content. And imagine how much better it would be with real photographers (as opposed to hipsters) as reviewers. I have never looked at one of Barney Britton's photos and felt anything. MrSMW
I have to say that without wishing to bash them in any way, but yes, their standard of photography is mediocre at best. When a new camera is reviewed and then a gallery posted, I’ve looked at the gallery and reminded myself (again), not to look at their galleries. Chxfgb
It's weird how every review seems to score between 81 to 85%. Like they are hedging their bets because it is owned by Amazon, so they shouldn't do anything to harm sales. Someone wanted to discuss sticking with old equipment the other week so that thread was closed for not being about gear and being too much about photography. Might have been same one as the link to here was in. Mods certainly have bias against certain topics and individuals. BTW. A quick search explained what happened with Jon Pais. Will pop back to catch up on the "drama" now. Hope it is as good as the Egyptian dude a couple of years ago. 😁
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 14, 2020 Author Administrators Share Posted July 14, 2020 Big gap in score... Both gold medals. Identical score... Canon gets gold, and the clearly superior camera gets silver. How can anybody say the EOS M6 is more recommendable than the X-Pro3? Or that an M100 deserves a gold? Just Bizarre. rawshooter
In all fairness, their 'award' system is based on camera categories, and they put the M6 and X-Pro 3 into different categories ("Mid Range Interchangeable Lens Camera / DSLR" for the M6 and "Semi-professional Interchangeable Lens Camera / DSLR" for the X-Pro3). Here's their explanation: https://www.*BAD_URL*/articles/4416254604/camera-scores-ratings-explained But it's still nonsense and garbage. High-quality tech review publications (such as the highly-regarded German computer magazine c't) never give awards and never declare "winners" in comparative reviews, but explain the individual strengths and weaknesses of particular products and let the reader decide. MrSMW
Don’t they say ‘within it’s class’ and these 2 cameras are in no way compar... hang on a minute... I’ve noticed this kind of thing before though. *updated* post crossover above saying the same thing!
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 14, 2020 Author Administrators Share Posted July 14, 2020 Surely Canon M100 is not the best in class though?
rawshooter
6 minutes ago, Andrew Reid said: Surely Canon M100 is not the best in class though? Just checked. They have it in the category "Entry Level Interchangeable Lens Camera / DSLR", with a number of cameras having equal scores and the Sony A6100 scoring better (82% vs. 79%). - I had the M100 in the past and must say that it's a very decent stills camera, especially in combination with the 22m/f2 pancake lens (which is as small as the smallest MFT cameras, but with an APS-C sensor, dual-pixel AF and a really good bang for the buck; as compact and as a good as a Fuji X100 if you shoot raw, but for a fraction of the price). True journalists and nerds. Too bad they canceled the show due to cost reasons. Right... Public German TV going downhills since then. Only cool station left is arte. Dpreview made me search for the GH2 and made me find Andrew Reids website. Loved them back then, reading about the small four thirds dslrs form Olympus, then a lumix G1, which even had 720p video I think. Stopped reading them on a regualar base a few years ago after their relaunch.
berkenboom
I understand that you want to block DPreview, I used to have a DPreview account, but i left a few years ago. I cant remember excectly why, but the strange gold/silver ratings of camera's or the inconsistency of listing the downsides like "No internal raw to jpg processing" or just the general moderating of their forums didn't help Also around that time their forum still had a post limit of 150 posts per thread😂 A different tech site where I am also a member can have threads as long as 20000 posts
