animan
Shooting with a GH3, Im finding Im using the 12-35mm a lot for convenience but am always a little disappointed with the over contrasty look of modern (panasonic/nikon/canon) lenses.. I wonder if what many people really miss for video shooting is a good modern lens with AF and stabilisation but made in an old fashioned way, more flare and less contrast, would this not also help us with the dynamic range in the scene that gets recorded by the sensor? Anyway, as an alternative I was wondering has anyone experimented with low contrast filters? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Contrast-Control/ci/159/N/4026728339
AaronChicago
Low Con filters or Pro Mist filters are the way to go. I use a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 on all GH3 shots to bring down the harshness.
andy lee
Tokina RMC 28-85mm f4 is a low contrast constant apperture manual zoom very good for that 70s movie look Flares nicely and does not have that 'crushed black' look of newer zooms think French Connection meets Bullett etc
animan
thanks, im looking at either an ultra contrast or pro mist from tiffen to try out, Im just wondering if used on a zoom, do you notice any strange effect between wide and long, people seem to suggest using stronger filters for wides than long? andy lee
I have Tiffen Promist 1 and 1/2 filters they are not really what I would use for low contrats on a zooms as they do massively soften the Image alot!! I use Promist to shoot close ups beauty shots of girls faces on pop videos
animan
I could imagine that andy with the 1 or 1/2, looking here I was thinking even the 1/8 might be just enough to bring the 12-35 in line with other older manual lenses, was hoping to find one that I could just leave on and forget about! Then again maybe the ultracontrast might be more neutral and a better choice..?
AaronChicago
Pro Mist does give light sources a bit of glow, but to me it doesn't look like a "beauty filter." I shot this video with the Black Pro Mist 1/4 on the entire time.
animan
Thanks! I think im gonna like it a lot, I ordered the 1/8 and if all is good will probably pick up the 1/4 at some stage later..
