Administrators Andrew Reid Posted April 13, 2021 Administrators Share Posted April 13, 2021 Canon are expected to announce the mysteriously numbered EOS R3. https://www.eoshd.com/news/development-announcement-of-canon-eos-r3/
alxxx
No need to use the R6 sensor (the same of the 1D X Mark III) nor the one from the R5, it should be a very new sensor, what's is to be expected is the class leading R5 IBIS and the same or better shutter than the 1DX III, a mechanical shutter at 20fps is already the best a camera can get, could even be improved, but 20fps mechanical is already a lot, E-shutter could be (and should be) much faster, I expect this camera to be a lot better than the R5 and as a consequence a lot better than any other comparable camera, this will be expensive, but not in the class of the future R1, in the past the EOS 3 was the "affordable" EOS 1 with just few and minor features missing, I expect the R3 to be 4999~6499$ while the future R1 6999~9999$. Video Hummus
Something looks off about the rendering. Perhaps a early internal mock-up design? Also, the naming. Reviving a one off EOS 3 back in the film days. Could also be they are just segmenting the market more to make sure they hit every price point because they plan on charging a hefty price for a flagship R1. Will be interesting if this is the “R5C”, ie not a real C badged Canon but basically an R5 internal specs on steroids with mechanical shutter and then the R1 will be $2000-3000 more and perhaps global shutter. Administrators Andrew Reid Posted April 13, 2021 Author Administrators Share Posted April 13, 2021 The EOS 3 film camera was basically cheaper version of the 1v wasn't it? So that should give us a clue.

I bought it 'spares'n'repairs' and found that the only reason it wasn't working was that the power winder contacts had corroded. A spot of tinfoil sorted that, but I also picked up a new standard battery grip. Total cost (for what was Canon's flagship)? £100.

Video Hummus
Depending on how they implement the eye-controlled AF it could be really, really useful, especially in video applications. Although, it would take practice. I'm not sure how it was implemented in the EOS 3, but hopefully it is programmable to a button like back-button-focus and that it uses your eye focus as an intelligent subject focus giving it more information about what is important in the frame. Think switching quickly between two athletes in the heat of the action or wildlife/bird photography and focusing on the bird and not the grass or branches in front. Kinda like a AF limiter that narrows the amount of decisions the AF has to make to determine what it should track.
Marcio Kabke Pinheiro
Hard to believe that the eye-focus would be precise enough to get a small focus point - the old EOS3 had only 45 af points. More probably (and still very useful) is that the eye could move a large box around the screen to set the focus area to where the AF mode (zone, Eye Af, etc) starts to scan. Or to move between faces in a scene.
Avenger 2.0
Or with face detection, the eye AF can select the right person.
RWR
Will it be able to focus on the masked?

Interesting they may have a 1 series body with the high megapixel count and this for speed.

Spider-Man maybe, but not Batman as there’s zero contrast and good luck with The Flash. With The Flash, you have to consider the camera's flash sync speed (it exists for it, don't?) And rolling shutter, for sure.
androidlad
Based on information from multiple sources, Canon originally planned to announce this camera as R1. However the Sony A1 was completely unexpected and too competitive. So Canon made a strategic decision to reposition this camera as R3, buying time to develop R1 that can truly compete with A1. Interesting. Probably a 20MP sensor.

The R1 will be like the R5 a higher megapixel body and the R3 like the R6 a lower megapixel body. That way they probably give the R1 8k video as well. Hopefully they will also release some new entry level full frame and crop frame bodies in the near future.
