Anyone here familiar with the Olympus 17mm f/1.8? Kinda curious about it, since it has that 17mm focal length, MF clutch especially and compact size. Didn't really consider it before, but now we have sensor stabilization on the Panasonics, it might be quite dope. Aside from the build quality and the sub-f/1.8 light gathering capability, think it might be a cheapo Nokton 17.5mm for us that like the focal length and MF.

I shot this video using the oly 17:

The lens is really nice, but I like the Pana 15 way more. What is really a pitty about the Oly lenses is that once they are in MF mode, the AF-ON button is disabled. When not setting the lens to MF mode, the focus ring is not linear anymore - very annoying for focus pulls.

The pana 15 fixes that since the focus ring is linear and even better than the one of the oly, again even when it is in its MF mode. And since we have a 1.1x crop in 4k anyway (at least for the GX80), the pana 15 actually becomes a 17 :)

I'm in love with how natural this looks.

What grade of Warm Black Mist Pro filter did you use?

Grades 1,2,3 are a bit to much like a 1970's porno according to what I've read.

1/2 is supposed to be most popular, still a strong haze but not overbearing.

1/4 is more subtle and natural.

1/8 is the least noticable.

I love the softening of the harsh highlights in this scene, but preservation of detail on the pavement and shutters... amazing. Really takes the digital edge of it and actually looks like haze in the atmosphere rather than a filter.

Thank you ??! I agree grades 1 and above are way too heavy. Not only do they give us the porno look they start to deteriorate the image :(

I used 1/8 for these shots and I use a max of 1/4 grade with my other lenses.

I prefer the warm black pro mist over the regular bpm because the color shift gives me way better skin tones than I usually get.

I just got a tiffen black satin 2 & I expect even better results with highlight rolloff and edge sharpening than I get with the wbpm.

Could you talk me through this behaviour with the AF-ON button Jase and whether you know if it is the same on the 45 1.8?

I have the 45 1.8 and when I'm testing it with my hardware controller in MF mode I can focus manually by wire with the joystick and activate an instant AF by pushing the stick in and I can also activate a joystick steerable mode where I can move the focus point around the screen and then press the stick in to activate an instant AF on that point.

I'm curious to know if this would solve the issue for you if it did the same with the 17 as I don't have one of those to test with?

It is true for all Oly lenses that have the MF declutch mode. The 45 1.8 doesnt have this mode, so the behaviour on this lens might be / is different.

Like i said, when you have such an oly lens with the focus ring pulled back, the AF-ON button is disabled (I set the AE/AF lock button to this mode). Once you push the focus ring back to normal mode, the AF-ON works as expected (even if you set your camera (not by using the lens!) to MF mode.

Ah, I see the distinction between them now.

Cheers

Looks nice. Miss your camera updates... Do you have an a6300 and a G7 now?

Btw, was that CineLikeD?

Thanks. I have both cameras right now. I'll sell the a6300 after I finish shooting my new short (I want to keep a consistent look). Yes, it was CinelikeD.

I`m looking for a 20-24mm lens, eos adaptable, preferably a vintage manual lens. It will be speed boosted so a FF lens, but not a nikon, I like the look but the focus ring drives me crazy. So far I`ve been looking a dinstagons, olympus 21mm 3.5...kinda like what I see out of this olympus but the 28 and 35mm seem like duds, so It would be hard to have a matched set.

Pentax M lenses have a similar look to Nikons. Otherwise maybe an RMC Tokina? I also have a manual Tokina zoom from the late 80s/early 90s that I really like. It's a 24-40mm constant f/2.8. I shot this with it on the D5500...

If you're in the States, I have a second copy of it in the Olympus mount I will be listing on eBay in the next few days.

Also Yashica ML lenses are often compared to Contax Zeiss. In fact, a lot of them were made in the same plant and some supposedly use Zeiss glass.

I have most of the tokina zooms, rmc and atx, but I`m looking for primes this time around. Yashica ml you say. Can they be adapted to ef mount?

Yes it's the same mount as Contax... the C/Y mount. I saw an f/2.8 24mm go for around $120 last week on eBay.

But I do feel compelled to add that even though the reverse focus of Nikon lenses annoys you, the 24mm f2 is a brilliant lens and on a speedbooster it will give you a 1.4. If you use them with a follow focus, you can usually reverse the gear so it turns the way you're accustomed to. Plus with patience one can be found for around $200. I also think Komine or Kiron may have made an f/2 24mm that is adaptable to EF.

speed is not that much of a concern, 2.8 is fine by me. I do have a few nikon primes, and while they do look nice I don`t see anything special in them. I use them by hanging the follow focus upside down when I need them, but this time around a want a setup that is as small as possible to fit in a motorcycle pouch.  A friend has a distagon 35 f2 and that lens on a full frame is magic, and it`s that look I`m wanting to find, but cant really shell out 1k+ for a single lens. It`s not a vintage low contrast lens, it`s punchy and it renders in a special way...background separation it outstanding.

What about the ZF distagons, they usually sell for around $6-700. The Nikon version has an aperture ring. Or I guess the better question is.... what's your budget? What camera are you using it with. And have you thought about Rokinon/Samyang lenses?

300€ would be my budget. It will be used on various MTF cameras with a speedbooster. I have had my share of samyang and besides the fisheye I use to film skateboarding they were all unreliable and the image is...hot to put it mehh....but the 8mm fish is a trooper, it has been droped at about 80 kmh, the camera went bust but I still use the lens :)

Okay, I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner but it sounds like the Contax Zeiss Distagon 25mm f/2.8 is probably the lens you are looking for. They go for about $400 USD... which is right around your ballpark. With the speedbooster it will be an f/1.8, f/2. It should be perfect.

@jagnje Another option is the Minolta Rokkor 24mm f/2.8.  Legendary lens; Leica even licensed the optical design to use in their R line of SLR lenses. You can find one around $150 if you look carefully, and a lens tech will convert it to EF mount for $100-150. Comes out to your budget on the dot. Plus there are plenty of other great lenses in the line, so building a matched set is no problem. Minolta even worked hard to keep all their lenses consistent in color and contrast, even adjusting their coatings for each lens design to keep everything matched perfectly. Google "Minolta Rokkor Survival Guide" if you want more details.
