All I can think of is that the bulb is dimmed or lower wattage, maybe some milky coating on the glass. Probably someone has a better explanation.

Edit: Also I suppose that everything is placed further away from the black background, so light from the bulb doesn't spill on the background.

No its the nature of promist filter which has very fine particle that will diffuse the light a little bit. So more of it and there will be more diffusion effect. Shane hulburt has a nice article on the different filters on his blog.

I believe Inazuma's question was how there is no glow on the bulb in the shot without filter.

I've done head to head comparisons with filters vs magic bullet haze/diffusion. For lower filtration, filters look much better. Higher filtration, it doesnt matter so much. MB works fine for that.

 

Yes I agree, but dang, those little things are expensive!  You can buy a used L lens for the same price. I want one, but not for $400 plus dollars.
