Tiffen filters video demonstration

Just found this, nice demonstration. They are working on making 4K version available.

In interested in knowing how, without the filters, there is absolutely no glow around the bulb :o

All I can think of is that the bulb is dimmed or lower wattage, maybe some milky coating on the glass. Probably someone has a better explanation.

Edit: Also I suppose that everything is placed further away from the black background, so light from the bulb doesn't spill on the background.

No its the nature of promist filter which has very fine particle that will diffuse the light a little bit. So more of it and there will be more diffusion effect. Shane hulburt has a nice article on the different filters on his blog.

So this is the future of 4k, because all those advocating 4k will have to learn to use those filters to smooth the sharpness of those 4k sensors, more so on human beings. Tiffen must be rubbing its hand in anticipation of the number of sales coming its way.

I believe Inazuma's question was how there is no glow on the bulb in the shot without filter.

Great test. Digital Diffusion FX 1 looks interesting. It doesn't give off too much of a glow like the others, yet softens the sharp image.

Formatt make a great supermist 1/4 which is like Tiffen Promist but not a harsh

I wonder what kind of effect these filters would have on scenery such as grass. Will the filters soften the look of such things, making them look more lush?

put a piece of kitchen food cling film over your lens - it does approximately the same thing - try it then you can see what it does.

it reduces contrast and sharpness and you get blooming on highlights

I've done head to head comparisons with filters vs magic bullet haze/diffusion. For lower filtration, filters look much better. Higher filtration, it doesnt matter so much. MB works fine for that.

Yes I agree, but dang, those little things are expensive!  You can buy a used L lens for the same price. I want one, but not for $400 plus dollars.
