Atomos acquired the intellectual property rights and technical team from broadcast equipment firm, Grass Valley five years ago to develop a leading-edge 8K video sensor. 8K video has four times the resolution of 4K video and allows video creators much greater flexibility when zooming in or cropping their shots during editing, as the resulting shot maintains sharpresolution. There are several 8K televisions already in the market from Samsung, Sony and LG and 8K gaming consoles are expected soon. 8K content however has been lagging because, outside of big camera makers such as Sony, owning 8K sensor technology is extremely rare. Development of Atomos’ 8K sensor is now complete. The Company is actively exploring opportunities for commercialisation and is in discussion with several camera makers who are showing great interest. Authorised for ASX release by the Atomos Board of Directors. --ENDS-- https://www.dpreview.com/news/3231195512/atomos-has-developed-an-8k-image-sensor-for-cinema-cameras majoraxis
newfoundmass
It wouldn't shock me at all. There will always be a market for monitors and recorders, but cameras are increasingly adding features and codecs that you needed recorders for in the past. The ability to record RAW was important short term, but it's only a matter of time before these companies develop their own flavor of RAW or implement ProRes RAW or BRAW directly, leaving Atomos out in the cold. It's hard to see where the camera industry will be in 5 years, let alone the monitor/recorder industry, but I imagine the former will be in better shape than the latter, especially with so many budget monitor options out there now and in the future. majoraxis and Emanuel
IronFilm
Clearly external recorders for cameras is not something that is going to last forever, as many cameras get better and better internal recording options (4K 10bit internal is now becoming common place and expected in every camera). This fact will become even more true within a few years once RED's patents expire (or even sooner if they get overturned! As they should be). Thus from the perspective of long term planning for the company it makes a lot of sense if Atomos starts to use their extensive knowledge with recorders and codecs to make "a recorder with a sensor" (i.e. a camera!). kye
